UNIC signs cooperation agreement with Unidroit

The School of Law of the University will now collaborate on research projects and other activities of the intergovernmental organisation along with 63 other participating countries

The University of Nicosia will begin collaborating on a series of joint activities of mutual interest with Unidroit, following the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the far-reaching intergovernmental organisation. Based in Rome, Unidroit boasts a membership of 63 participating countries, including Cyprus (which joined in 1999).

Unidroit’s primary objective is the harmonization of private international law and the preparation of international conventions and model laws, many of which have been ratified by the Republic of Cyprus.

The cooperation agreement signed by Professor Ignacio Tirado, Secretary-General of Unidroit, and Professor Philippos Pouyioutas, Rector of the University of Nicosia, calls for the participation of the School of Law of the University in Unidroit’s research projects and other activities. Particular emphasis will be placed on the legal aspects of Heritage Protection, an issue of particular concern to both Unidroit and the Republic of Cyprus, which ratified the Unidroit Convention on stolen or illegally exported cultural goods in 2004. The Convention has so far been ratified by 36 signatory states, including Greece.

The Dean of the School of Law, Professor Achilles Emilianides, will be responsible for the implementation of the cooperation agreement between Unidroit and the University of Nicosia, along with faculty member Dr Irene Stamatoude.
