UNIC recognised as “Biggest Contributor to the Rise of Blockchain in 2018”

As part of the “The Blocks”, Blockchain Expo Europe’s inaugural awards celebrating excellence in Blockchain Technologies

The University of Nicosia (UNIC) has just been awarded the title of “Biggest Contributor to the Rise of Blockchain in 2018” at this year’s annual Blockchain Expo, held in RAI, Amsterdam, on 26-27 June 2018. The accolade at the inaugural Blockchain Awards was earmarked for an organisation that has demonstrated excellence in the strategy, application, or effectiveness of blockchain technologies over the past year.

More generally, the “Biggest Contributor” award is viewed as an acknowledgement of UNIC’s continued global firsts in blockchain education. UNIC stands out as the first university to offer a free online course on cryptocurrency, followed by the world’s first full academic degree in blockchain (MSc in Digital Currency). In the past year, UNIC once again broke new ground by being the first university in the world to publish all diplomas of its graduating students on the Bitcoin blockchain.

“We pride ourselves on pushing the envelope in university adoption of blockchain technology and advancing cutting-edge research and education in this area. We are particularly pleased when our efforts are recognised in this way, as part of Europe’s largest annual blockchain event”, remarked Soulla Louca, Director of the Blockchain Initiative at the University of Nicosia.

The awards took place on 27 June 2018 at The Boathouse in RAI Amsterdam, following an engaging first day of top-level keynotes, interactive panel discussions and solution-based case studies at the Blockchain Expo Europe. Guests were greeted by Richard Kastelein, Founder of Blockchain News, and host of the celebration tasked with recognising excellence in blockchain technologies.

The Blocks Awards panel of judges comprised top industry leaders such as Marcella Atzori, Tiana Laurence, Nick Ayton, and others. All entries were judged on the following criteria: Innovation; Technical Excellence; Impact; Usability; Effectiveness; Implementation; and Potential for Growth.

Blockchain Expo is Europe’s largest established business blockchain event, bringing together 8000+ dedicated blockchain industry attendees, across key industries, for two days of world-class content from leading brands that embrace and develop cutting-edge blockchain technologies.
