The Department of Accounting, Economics and Finance develops graduates who can interpret economic change, evaluate financial information, assess risk and contribute to responsible decision-making in an increasingly complex global environment. Its academic portfolio brings together Accounting, Banking, Economics and Finance, while engaging with developments in artificial intelligence, financial technology, data analytics, workflow automation, sustainable finance and corporate reporting.

The Department’s programmes combine rigorous academic foundations with professional relevance and applied learning across accounting, auditing, corporate taxation, economics and finance. Students develop the analytical capabilities, technical expertise and professional judgment required to interpret financial information, evaluate markets and institutions, assess risk and support sound decision-making in complex business and policy environments.

Our graduates are prepared to create value across accounting and professional services, banking and finance, investment and asset management, consulting, regulation, public policy and emerging digital-finance industries. Through research-informed teaching and engagement with professional practice, they acquire the adaptability, ethical awareness and strategic perspective needed to navigate uncertainty, promote accountability and contribute to sustainable economic and financial development.

The Department supports internationally recognised professional programmes in Accounting and Finance. Students enrolled in the BSc Accounting programme receive the maximum nine exemptions from the thirteen modules required for the ACCA Qualification, as well as eight exemptions from the fourteen ICAEW modules. The programme is also affiliated with the CFA Institute and incorporates more than 70% of the CFA Programme curriculum, providing students with strong preparation for globally recognised professional qualifications and careers in accounting, finance and investment.

Through scholarly excellence and active engagement in funded research, professional networks and advisory bodies, the Department’s faculty connect academic knowledge with professional practice. The create a learning environment that encourages analytical thinking, intellectual curiosity and meaningful impact across a rapidly evolving economic and financial landscape.
