Thomas Nektarios Papanastasiou is Associate Professor of Public International Law at the School of Law, UNIC Athens (University of Nicosia ). His research focuses on international investment law, energy law and human rights, particularly the protection of offshore energy infrastructure and the allocation of geopolitical risk. He also coordinates the preparation of the School of Law’s proposed PhD programme and serves as Deputy Director of the Diplomacy and International Engagement Platform (DIEP). He holds a PhD in International Studies, specialising in international investment law, and an MA in International Relations from Waseda University, Japan, where he studied as a Japanese Government (MEXT) scholar. He also holds an LL.M. in Civil Procedural Law and an LL.B. from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. His doctoral dissertation received the 2013 Arghyrios Fatouros Prize for international economic law. He is co -author of International Investment, Political Risk, and Dispute Resolution: A Practitioner’s Guide (Oxford University Press, 2020) and has published widely on international law. His professional experience includes work with the World Bank, the OECD and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). He has also served as a legal expert for the Law Office of the Republic of Cyprus in the UNIDROIT –ICC project on international investment contracts. He is a member of the Athens Bar Association and the elected Treasurer of the Hellenic Society of International Law and International Relations.
