Followed by a discussion moderated by Elena Parpa with guests Evagoras Vanezis and Faysal Mroueh, curatorial project Formworks 02.
The work of artist Zach Blas examines technologies of control through the lens of queer and feminist politics. In recent years, his projects have addressed biometric capture, psychedelia and AI, the crystal balls of Silicon Valley, airport security, and dildos. Blas presents a suite of these works, including The Doors (2019), Icosahedron (2019), and SANCTUM (2018). He has exhibited, lectured, and held screenings recently at the Walker Art Center, 2018 Gwangju Biennale, Matadero Madrid, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the 68th Berlin International Film Festival, Art in General, Gasworks, and e-flux. Blas is currently co-editing the anthology Informatics of Domination and writing the book Informatic Opacity: The Art of Defacement in Biometric Times. Blas is a Lecturer in the Department of Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths, University of London, a 2018-2020 UK Arts and Humanities Research Council Leadership Fellow, and a 2019 Mercator Fellow in “Configurations of Film” at Goethe-Universität Frankfurt.
The talk takes place in the context of the Sickle & Code exhibition and events programme, and as part of the project Phygital.
