Annual Book Αwards of The Cyprus Review in category ‘Law’ (2021)

The leading Cyprological journal The Cyprus Review (CR) announces the results of its Annual Book Awards in the category ‘Law’ for books published within 2021. The Editor-in-Chief of the CR would like to express her warm appreciation to the members of the Scientific Committee Achilles C. Emilianides, Christos Papastylianos, Christia Middleton, Elias Stephanou, and Stergios Mitas.

The award ‘Constantinos Emilianides’ is awarded to Natasa Mavronicola for her monograph Torture, Inhumanity and Degradation under Article 3 of the ECHR: Absolute Rights and Absolute Wrongs (Oxford: Hart).

The Scientific Committee unanimously decided that the book deserves the award, since it provides new theoretical insights on, and effectively aims to re-interpret, an important fundamental right, i.e. the prohibition of torture, inhumanity and degrading treatment. More importantly, it delimits the notion of an ‘absolute right’ and considers how such absolutism has been treated in the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights, and how it should be treated as a matter of principle. The analysis delves into the idea of rights and wrongs and how positive and negative obligations should legally be considered. The monograph is structured and systematic with clear research objectives and exhaustive literature review, and in-depth analysis of the subject matter.

The results on the remaining categories, and details of the award ceremony, will be announced in due time.
