Dr Elias Yfantis

Dr Elias Yfantis (EY) is the Professor for Marine Engines at the Hellenic Naval Academy since December 1995 and the coordinator of the Mechanical Engineering Program at the University of Nicosia (School of Sciences and Engineering, Department of Engineering) since September 2017.

He was born in Athens, Greece in 1964. He is married with two daughters and he lives in Nicosia.

EY obtained his PhD degree in 1991 and his Engineering Diploma in 1987, both from School of Mechanical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens, Greece.

EY has administrative experience at the Hellenic Naval Academy as

  • The Dean of the Academy (2004-2009),
  • Α member of the Academy Council, (1999-2017), and
  • The Head of the Section of Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering, (2007-2017).

In addition, he has research and teaching experience as well as laboratory experience in the fields of

  • Thermodynamics & Heat Transfer,
  • Diesel Engines & Gas Turbines, and   Industrial & Marine Energy Systems.

He cooperates constantly since 1993 with the Laboratories of Internal Combustion Engines and Thermal Turbomachines of the National Technical University of Athens in research projects related to

  • The evaluation of the operational and environmental behaviour of diesel engines,
  • The development and application of diagnostic techniques for diesel engines and
  • The development of gas turbines simulation tools and virtual laboratories.

EY also collaborates with Cranfield University as visiting staff and member of the International Advisory Board of the Centre for Gas Turbine Diagnostics and Life Cycle Cost, since 2003, and he is the National Representative in the NATO Science and Technology Organization and member of the Applied Vehicle Technology Panel, since 1997. Recently, a collaboration has been established with AVL List GmbH, Austria, in the field of Simulation of Marine Engines and Integrated Propulsion Systems.

During 2016-2017 he served the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Greece as a Member of the Working Group for Strategic Planning and R&D Projects. Currently, he is member of the International Advisory Committee for the establishment of the School of Marine Science and Technology at the University of Cyprus and member of the International Academic and Industry Board of the Marine and Maritime Research, Innovation and Technology Center of Excellence MaRITeC-X in Cyprus.

EY has more than 60 publications in international journals and international conference proceedings and participated in the organization of international conferences. He is, also, reviewer for international journals (Energy Engineering) and conferences organized by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).

He is also the editor-in-chief of “Nausivios Chora”, the International Journal in Naval Sciences and Technology, since 2006, and member of the Scientific Committee of the Annual Meetings of Marine Technology/Hellenic Institute of Marine Technology, since 2012.

Finally, he is a founding member of the Society for the Study of Ioannis Kapodistrias Work and served the Municipality of Dionysos, Attica, Greece as the Vice Mayor for Strategic Planning and Development (Sept 2014 – Sept. 2016).
