University of Nicosia Hosts Conference on Commandaria Wine Heritage
Experts gather at UNIC to explore the 800-year legacy of Cyprus’s renowned wine
The University of Nicosia hosted a conference examining the cultural and historical importance of Commandaria on Wednesday, 9 April 2025, at the UNESCO Amphitheatre. The event, titled “Celebrating 800+ Years of Commandaria: A Journey through Cyprus’ Legendary Wine Heritage”, brought together experts in wine, tourism, agriculture, and gastronomy.
The day began with registration and a welcome by Nour Samin, a student of BBA Hospitality Management Programme, followed by a series of presentations from industry experts:
- Dr Francis Nectarios Guy, Director of the Cyprus Wine Museum: “Commandaria and the Battle of the Wines: 800 Years of Legacy, Cultural Diplomacy, and Modern Cultural Initiatives”
- Mr Polys Kallis, Executive Chairman of Cypria Filoxenia: “Commandaria: Timeless Legend or Hard-Earned Craft?”
- Mrs Florentia Kythreotou, Chief Editor of Taste Wine & Dine: “From Sweet to Savoury”
- Mr Sotiris Neophytides, Award-winning Sommelier and Vocational Teacher: “Styles and Service Tips of Commandaria”
- Mr Philippos Drousiotis, Executive Chairman of Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative: “Experiential Tourism: A Form of Sustainable Tourism”
- Dr Thoukis Georgiou, Agricultural Officer at the Ministry of Agriculture: “Commandaria: The Legendary Wine Product of Cyprus”
The presentations were followed by a panel discussion moderated by Alyona Zharova, a student of BBA Tourism, Leisure and Events Management Programme. The conference concluded with a Commandaria-themed exhibition at the BLOCK Gallery and a buffet lunch.
The conference was organised by students of the Conferences and Exhibitions Class, Spring 2025, as part of their course requirements, in collaboration with Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative, Cypria Filoxenia, and the University’s Department of Management.
