UNIC Recognised with the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) 2019 Student Chapter Excellence Award

The Academic Year 2018-19 proved particularly exciting and rewarding for the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Student Chapter at the University of Nicosia. Recognising its important role in advancing the discipline of Petroleum Engineering, the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) awarded the University of Nicosia the Student Chapter Excellence Award for 2019.

This prestigious award is the second highest honor a Student Chapter may receive and is awarded to only 20% of Student Chapters around the world. The Excellence Award is in recognition of the Student Chapter’s programmes in industry engagement, operations and planning, community involvement, professional development, and innovation.

Established in 2013, the SPE Student Chapter is one of the most active student societies at the University with more than 75 members. Among other activities, the SPE Student Chapter organises technical talks, field trips, video screenings, site visits, workshops and competitions. The society also hosts various actions which aim to strengthen the ties between academia and the oil and gas industry deemed necessary in meeting the world’s energy needs in a sustainable and environmentally friendly fashion.

Commenting on this recognition, the Dean of the School of Sciences and Engineering, Dr George Gregoriou, extended his warmest congratulations to the SPE Student Chapter officers, with special thanks going to the President of the Chapter, Mr Kostas Poursanides, as well as to its faculty advisor, Dr Constantinos Hadjistassou, and to the rest of the highly engaged team of faculty that contributed to this success.

“We are looking forward to another vibrant Academic Year 2019-20”, concluded Dean Gregoriou.

It is worth noting that the University of Nicosia is a pioneer in the field of Oil and Gas in the Eastern Mediterranean region, offering undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes of study in both Engineering and Management of Oil and Gas since 2013.
