“The Latest Developments in the Hydrocarbon Sector in the South-Eastern Mediterranean” online event completed with success

On February 9, the Schools of Law of UNIC and AUTH co-organised an online event entitled: “The Latest Developments in the Hydrocarbon Sector in the South-Eastern Mediterranean”. The event was held under the auspices of the newly established Chair of Cypriot Studies of AUTH, which was established and operates at the Faculty of Law of AUTH, thanks to a donation granted by the Cypriot Government.

The Vice Rector for Research and Lifelong Learning of AUTH Prof. Stratos Stylianidis, and the Consul of Cyprus in Thessaloniki Prof. Konstantinos Polykarpou, addressed the event. In the discussion that followed, speakers included the Secretary General for Energy and Mineral Resources at the Ministry for the Environment and Energy Alexandra Sdoukou, Associate Professor of Geopolitics and Energy Policy at the University of Nicosia Theodoros Tsakiris, the Dean of UNIC School of Law Prof. Achilles C. Emilianides, the Dean of the Faculty of Law of AUTH Prof. Panagiotis Glavinis, and the Head of the Scientific Committee of the of UNIC School of Law Prof. Antonis Manitakis.

In particular, the effort of Greece and Cyprus for energy autonomy through the research and exploitation of hydrocarbons was presented, while the consequences of the war in Ukraine in the energy sector were evaluated. Finally participants had a chance to pose their questions, and in the context of the discussion, the connection between the energy sector and foreign policy was analysed.
