Second-Year Architecture Students Win Multiple Prizes in Global Humanitarian Design Competition
Second-year architecture students at the University of Nicosia won most of the prizes and honourable mentions in the global “Community Urban Farm” architecture competition, with their studio project set in Gaza.
The students competed against architects, designers, planners and students from all five years of study at leading universities around the world, according to the university’s Architecture Department.
First prize Marilia Petrou – Vlada Dovguchits
First prize was awarded to Marilia Petrou and Vlada Dovguchits, and third prize to Despina Ignatiou. Honourable mentions went to Meto Hisotoci, Daria Shevchenko, Maria Veniamin and Despoina Pyrpou; to Lali Dzsandzsgava and Morgane Azar; and to Anthi Batsouli, Kleopatra Prodromou, Dora Michael and Lynn Danaf.
Third prize Despina Ignatiou
The competition formed a major part of the students’ spring semester studio, the department’s main course for the term, which led to the development of the “Community HOME GROWN” project. The choice of site for the competition was open, and the department said the semester’s focus on the role of architecture in humanitarian contexts led the studio to choose Gaza as the site for the students’ projects.
The course was taught by lecturers Angela Kyriacou Petrou, Afra Omidi, Teresa Tourvas and Yiorgos Hadjichristou as part of the second-year spring semester programme at the University of Nicosia’s Architecture Department.
