Procedural Law Unit Participated in Parliamentary Discussion on the 2026 Rule of Law Report
The discussion addressed key challenges affecting the administration of justice, including persistent delays in court proceedings and the progress of ongoing judicial and institutional reforms. In his contribution to the discussion, Dr. Kyriakides emphasised the need for specific timetables and concrete next steps from the competent authorities in response to the issues identified by the European Commission, so that the discussion moves beyond the identification of problems towards their effective resolution.
Dr. Kyriakides also referred to the disciplinary proceedings concerning a district court judge, who received a public reprimand following disciplinary proceedings, raising the case in the broader context of judicial independence and the safeguards surrounding the exercise of judicial functions. He noted that the protection of judicial independence will require continued attention in the period ahead.
The discussion highlighted the importance of sustained institutional commitment to strengthening the administration of justice in Cyprus, with clear deadlines and accountability for implementing reforms, while safeguarding the independence of the judiciary.
