Making and Unmaking Heritage in Cyprus” by Gisela Welz, Professor of Cultural Anthropology and European Ethnology at Goethe University Frankfurt on Main.

9 March, 2016, 19:00, UNESCO Amphitheatre

Welcome address: Dr. Hubert Faustmann, Associate Professor, University of Nicosia

Speakers:
Professor Yiannis Papadakis, University of Cyprus
Dr. Nicos Peristianis, President of the Council, University of Nicosia

The book argues that in Europe, ‘heritage making’ has become a technology of governance. In Cyprus, the tourism sector emerged as an important conduit for heritage making. Distinct practices of representing and communicating heritage have been developed, with places, architecture and food, even atmospheres and experiences, being reinvented as heritage.  Today, heritage is a “European product” that in the Republic of Cyprus has become increasingly infused with European Union regulatory power and hegemonic discourses.
