About the Programme
The PhD in Biological Sciences is a rigorous, research-intensive programme designed to cultivate independent scientific inquiry and innovation. Spanning three academic years and comprising 180 ECTS, the programme integrates advanced theoretical instruction with hands-on research in areas such as molecular biology, nutrition, drug discovery, microbiome research, and environmental science. Interdisciplinary collaboration, access to state-of-the-art lab technologies (e.g., NGS, mass spectrometry), and industry partnerships ensure a comprehensive learning experience.

Available PhD Projects
Development and Evaluation of a Culturally Adapted Allergen Application for the Cypriot and Greek Population
Supervisor: Dr Stella A. Nicolaou, Associate Professor, Department of Life Sciences
Food allergy is a rising public-health concern across Europe, yet currently available mobile allergen-scanning applications are designed primarily for Anglophone and Northern European markets. This project aims to develop and evaluate a culturally adapted Greek-language allergen application tailored to the needs of the Cypriot and Greek population. The research combines health informatics, food science, natural language processing, human-computer interaction, and public health to improve food safety and support individuals living with food allergies.
MTHFD2 as a Metabolic Checkpoint in Human CD8⁺ T Cell Immunity
Supervisor: Dr Vicky Nicolaidou, Associate Professor, Department of Life Sciences
This project focuses on the emerging field of immunometabolism, investigating how the metabolic enzyme MTHFD2 regulates human CD8⁺ T-cell function in health and inflammatory disease. The research combines cellular immunology, flow cytometry, and molecular biology to uncover mechanisms linking metabolism to immune regulation and identify novel therapeutic approaches for inflammatory and immune-mediated disorders.
Gut Microbiota and Cortical Excitability: Exploring the Gut–Brain Axis in Humans
Supervisor: Dr Myrtani Pieri, Associate Professor, Department of Life Sciences
The gut microbiota is increasingly recognised as an important modulator of brain function, yet the mechanisms linking microbial composition with human cortical excitability remain poorly understood. This interdisciplinary project, conducted in collaboration with the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences at the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), will investigate associations between gut microbiome composition and excitatory and inhibitory brain processes in healthy individuals and clinical populations. The project will combine transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), electroencephalography (EEG), eye-tracking, cognitive assessments, and gut microbiome analysis to identify microbiome markers associated with cortical excitability and behavioural control. Applicants with a background in Biology, Neuroscience, Psychology, Biomedical Sciences, or related disciplines are encouraged to apply.

Admission Requirements and Procedures
Eligibility Criteria:
The minimum requirement for admission to the doctoral degree programme is a Master’s Degree and a Thesis Proposal.
Applicants should also have a strong academic background in Biological Sciences or a closely related discipline, demonstrate research potential, and satisfy the admission requirements of the PhD Programme in Biological Sciences, including English language proficiency where applicable.
Applicants must:
- Hold a Master’s degree in Biological Sciences or a closely related field (e.g., Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Nutrition, Environmental Health).
- Have a GPA ≥ 3.00/4.00 or equivalent.
- Demonstrate prior research experience or scientific interest in the field.
- Satisfy English language proficiency requirements (TOEFL ≥ 550, IELTS ≥ 6.5, or equivalent; not required if prior studies were in English).
- Participate in an interview with the admissions committee.
