Professor Nikolaos Antonakakis

Professor Nikolaos Antonakakis currently serves as Professor of Economics and Director of the School of Business at the University of Nicosia, Athens Campus. He is also affiliated with the School’s Department of Accounting, Economics and Finance. His academic background is rooted in economics, econometrics, international finance, and macroeconomics. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Strathclyde, an MSc in International and Financial Economics from the same institution, and a BSc in Economics with Honours from the Athens University of Economics and Business.

Professor Antonakakis has developed an international academic career spanning Greece, Austria, and the United Kingdom. Before joining the University of Nicosia, he was Professor of Economics at Webster Vienna Private University, where he also served as Head of the Department of Business and Management. He has held academic and research positions at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, the University of Portsmouth, Johannes Kepler University Linz, and the University of Strathclyde. His international experience has enabled him to work across diverse academic environments and to contribute to research and teaching in economics, finance, business, and quantitative methods.

His research interests include applied time-series econometrics, international finance, international macroeconomics, European integration, health economics, energy economics, tourism economics, financial markets, and economic policy. His recent work has also examined political risk, economic policy uncertainty, inflation, financial connectedness, mental health, workplace conditions, artificial intelligence, tourism negotiations, and the relationship between macroeconomic conditions and social well-being.

Professor Antonakakis has published more than seventy articles in international peer-reviewed journals, including Social Science & Medicine, Public Choice, Economics Letters, Energy Economics, International Review of Economics and Finance, Resources Policy, Review of Development Economics, and Applied Economics Letters. He has also contributed chapters to books published by leading academic publishers, including Routledge, Edward Elgar, De Gruyter Brill, Palgrave Macmillan, and Springer Nature. His research has attracted international media attention, including coverage by The Guardian, Forbes, Newsweek, CNBC, The Irish Times, Der Standard, and ORF Science.

He has served as an editor, associate editor, guest editor, and editorial board member for several international journals. His editorial work includes special issues on sustainable development, big data, energy consumption, economic growth, and spatial econometrics. He is also a regular reviewer for leading journals in economics, finance, health economics, energy, econometrics, and social science.

Professor Antonakakis has participated in several externally funded research projects supported by organisations including the European Commission, the Austrian Central Bank, the London School of Economics, and NHS Portsmouth Hospitals Trust. His research and academic contributions have been recognised through numerous distinctions, including repeated inclusion among the World’s Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University, the ranking of second economist in Cyprus in 2026 according to IDEAS-RePEc, the Excellence in Teaching Award from Webster Vienna Private University, and several best paper, highly cited researcher, and outstanding reviewer awards.

In addition to his research, Professor Antonakakis has extensive teaching experience at undergraduate, postgraduate, MBA, and executive levels. He has taught economics, finance, econometrics, statistics, financial modelling, international trade, macroeconomics, and business research analysis. His academic work combines rigorous quantitative analysis with a strong commitment to research-led teaching, institutional leadership, and the development of internationally engaged business education.
