Ambassador of Cuba visits the University of Nicosia

Discussion for collaboration with the Embassy and Cuban universities

His Excellency, the Ambassador of Cuba, Mr Angel Gustavo Suárez Cordero, visited the University of Nicosia on Wednesday, 18 January 2022. During his visit, he met with the Rector of the University, Professor Philippos Pouyioutas, the Senior Vice Rector, Professor Constantinos Phellas, and the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Professor Panayiotis Angelides.

Rector Pouyioutas presented the Ambassador with information regarding the University of Nicosia, focusing on the high-quality education offered. Rector Pouyioutas highlighted the University’s distinctions in the major university rankings and especially its distinctive ranking among the top 501-600 in the world (Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023).

Referring to the internationalisation initiatives and the broader strategy of the European Union vis-à-vis Higher Education, Professor Pouyioutas briefed the Ambassador on the inclusion of the University of Nicosia in the newly established NEOLAiA European University Alliance which includes eight other top European universities.

On his part, the Ambassador highlighted the possibilities of collaboration between the University and the Embassy in co-organizing a series of events and reiterated his wish to enhance this collaboration, as well as to support the University of Nicosia with its international endeavours, including strengthening its collaboration with Cuban universities in various fields.

In closing, Rector Pouyioutas thanked the Ambassador for the visit, underscoring that the University of Nicosia is always at the disposal of the Embassy to assist and support it and any Cuban students wishing to study at the University.
