Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder which affects the large bowel causing bloating, gas, abdominal pain and constipation/diarrhoea. The underlying cause is unknown but sometimes symptoms of IBS may stem from a gastrointestinal infection. Controlling triggers such as anxiety and dietary factors (i.e. FODMAP diet) is very important.
It must be noted that IBS symptoms may mimic more serious conditions such as ovarian or bowel cancer. It is therefore important to consult your doctor to discuss your symptoms and rule out other medical conditions.
Please note that IBS cannot be diagnosed for recent symptoms – as IBS is a chronic condition that develops over time – or if your symptoms have begun after age 55.
