Haemorhoids

Haemorrhoids are swollen veins in or around the anus. They are generally caused by vascular cushions which are pushed out when straining to pass stool. It is a common occurrence in Western societies, often due to an inadequate fibre intake.

You should not be alarmed as haemorrhoids are benign. Treatment includes using over-the-counter creams, preferably containing steroids to shrink the haemorrhoids but also laxatives to soften your stool. If you have a fever, not getting better after 7 days or any other concern, please see your personal doctor.
