RECEN consists of scientists from different disciplines such as exercise science and exercise physiology, nutrition and dietetics, biochemistry and metabolism, human biology and exercise psychology. The members of RECEN are very active in research both at local and European level. Some of the RECEN members are board members in professional and academic associations and serve as members of the editorial boards of international peer-reviewed journals. Moreover, the members of RECEN are actively involved in European-funded projects, including Horizon 2020, European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) actions, and Research and Innovation Foundation of Cyprus programs.

Dr. Christoforos Giannaki (Exercise and Health Physiology)
Dr. Christoforos Giannaki is an Associate Professor in the Department of Life and Health Sciences of the University of Nicosia, Cyprus. He is the PhD program coordinator in Exercise Science and Physical Education (since 2019). He holds a BSc Degree in Physical Education and Sports Science from the University of Thessaly, Greece, a MSc Degree in Sports Physiology from Liverpool John Moores University, United Kingdom and a PhD from the School of Medicine, University of Thessaly, Greece. His research interests focus on the effects of exercise on various health-related parameters, including physical fitness, sleep, cognitive function, and quality of life in healthy people of all ages and patients with chronic diseases such as chronic kidney disease, multiple sclerosis and obesity. So far, he has more than 65 PubMed/Scopus research articles in scientific peer-reviewed journals, including publications in high impact factor journals in the areas of Medicine, Exercise Science, Sleep Medicine, Nutrition and Human Physiology. He is a member of international health and medical-related bodies, including the European Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group and the European College of Sports Science, while he is the secretary of the Hellenic Society of Biochemistry and Physiology of Exercise. Dr. Giannaki is an editorial board member of the BMC Nephrology, European Review of Aging and Physical Activity and Frontiers in Striated Muscle Physiology journals.

Dr. George Aphamis (Exercise Physiology and Sports Nutrition)
Dr. George Aphamis is an Assistant Professor in Exercise Physiology. He studied Sports Science and Physical Education at the University of Athens, Greece, graduating with a specialization in Track and Field Coaching. Then, he went to McGill University, Montreal, Canada where he completed graduate studies in Exercise Physiology, and later continued his studies at the doctorate level in the area of Exercise Physiology at Loughborough University, Loughborough, UK. Since his return to Cyprus in 2008 until now, he have been working as a lecturer in the Sports Science programme of the University of Nicosia where he teaches Athletics, Biochemistry of Exercise, Sports Coaching and a number of modules on exercise physiology and performance optimization. Research wise, he has been active in the areas of (i) Hydration, including chronic hydration levels of adults and adolescents, athletes, and potential effects on exercise performance and overall health, (ii) Muscle cell volume and muscle cell hydration, and how this affects exercise performance and capacity; (iii) High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), (iv) Ergogenic aids in sport, investigating potential effects of some nutritional supplements. Dr Aphamis is involved in several nutrition and sports performance projects, exercise, and health. His research work has been presented at international conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Eleni Andreou (Nutrition and Dietetics)
Dr Eleni Andreou is a Clinical Dietitian and Associate Professor at the University of Nicosia. She possesses a B.Sc. (Summa Cum Laude) from Youngstown State University, USA, in Dietetics (Food and Nutrition/Dietetic)(1990). She continued the biennial academic and practicum (postgraduate level) in the Clinical Dietetics (including Administrative and Community) at the same university and in Southside & Northside Memorial Hospital in the Ohio. She was granted the title of RD by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of USA upon the completion of the qualification exams(1992). She received the Doctorate in Professional Studies from Middlesex University with the title Clinical Dietetics, Nutrition Sciences and Health Education with the area of interest in Behavioural Modification. Today, she practices the profession as a private clinical dietitian and coordinates and teaches at University of Nicosia the Dietetics and Nutrition programs as Associate Professor. Also, she is a researcher in her field and collaborates with medical centres, consults companies in the Food and Pharmaceutical Industry, and is the Scientific Advisor and member of other Health Associations (as Cyprus Association for Cancer Patients and Friends Cyprus Diabetes Association and Cyprus Heart Association) . She is an author of scientific articles and books related to dietetics. She is currently the President of the Cyprus Dietetic and Nutrition Association, the president of the Cyprus Societic of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (CySPEN), the vice president of the Cyprus Registration Board for Food Scientists, Technologists and Dietetitians and board member of the Cyprus Atherosclerosis Association.

Professor Kyriakos Felekkis (Human Biology)
Prof. Kyriacos Felekkis is a Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in the Department of Life and Health Sciences of the University of Nicosia. He is currently the Head of Department. Prof. Felekkis obtained his PhD degree from Boston University School of Medicine in 2004 in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Since 2011, he is a TRF in the Department of Life and Health Sciences. He served as the chairperson of the Departmental Postgraduate Programme Committee at the University of Nicosia, he is an audit member of the Senate and recently elected as a member of the University Council. In 2015, Prof. Felekkis was appointed a member of the Cyprus National Bioethics Committee by the Council of Ministers. His research interest centers around the study of microRNAs and their role in the pathogenesis of human disease as well as their contribution in gene expression regulation. Prof. Felekkis has close collaboration with several research institutions in Cyprus, Greece, Europe and USA. His work has been published in various International Journals and books.

Antonis Zavros. PhD candidate in Sports and Exercise Nutrition
Antonis Zavros is a Ph.D. candidate at the Department of Life and Health Sciences of the University of Nicosia, Cyprus. He holds a BSc degree in Sports Science and Physical Education from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, an MSc degree in Exercise Fitness and Health from the University of Nicosia, Cyprus, and an MSc degree in Applied Nutrition and Dietetics from the European University of Cyprus. Antonis Zavros has been awarded a Ph.D. scholarship by the Cyprus National Scholarships Foundation for his academic achievements. His research interests focus on the effects of nutritional supplements and high-intensity functional training on the metabolism, thyroid function, exercise performance, and body composition in overweight-obese people.

Angelos Vlahogiannis. PhD candidate in Sports and Exercise Nutrition
Mr. Angelos Vlahoyiannis is a Dietician Nutritionist and PhD candidate in Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Nicosia. He obtained both his BSc degree in Nutrition and Dietetics (2015) and his MSc degree in Sports Nutrition/Dietetics and Nutrition Intervention (2018) with honors. He was awarded as the “Best School of Sciences and Engineering Graduate” in 2018 and has published several scientific articles related to nutrition, exercise and sleep and presented his research in scientific conferences.

Dimitris Papamichael is a Ph.D. candidate at the Department of Life and Health Sciences of the University of Nicosia, Cyprus. He holds a BSc degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from the Technological Educational Institute of Crete, Greece, an MSc degree in Clinical Nutrition from the Harokopio University of Athens. His research interests focus on the effects of Mediterranean Diet on cancer – related fatigue and recurrence in cancer survivors.
