Vasilis Kallis is an Associate Professor of Music Theory and Associate Head of the Department of Music & Dance at the University of Nicosia. He holds a BFA in Guitar Performance from the State University of New York (1993, Purchase College), an MA in Music Theory from the City University of New York (1996, Queens College), and a PhD in Music Theory and Analysis from the University of Nottingham (2003). His MA studies were funded by a CASP scholarship from the Fulbright Foundation. For his doctoral studies Kallis received a Research Studentship from the University of Nottingham.
He has taught at the University of Nottingham as adjunct lecturer (1999–2001) and the University of Macedonia, Greece (2002–2007). In 2007 he was appointed as full-time faculty at the University of Nicosia.
His research interests include methods of pitch organization in early twentieth-century music, scale theory, popular music (particularly rock music), form and formenlehre, and Scriabin and Debussy.
He has published in several internationally renowned journals including Music Analysis and Music Theory Online, two of the most esteemed music theory and analysis journals worldwide. His publications also include a chapter on art composition in Cyprus in Music in Cyprus (Ashgate Publishing) and four articles for the entry ‘Cyprus’ in the Grove Music Online, the foremost music dictionary internationally.
