Research

At UNIC Health, we are committed to advancing research that embodies the holistic concept of One Health. Our researchers engage in a broad spectrum of studies, ranging from clinical and epidemiological to basic science and social science research.

Tangible Impact on Global Health

At UNIC Health, One Health research is a central pillar, reflecting our commitment to advancing health across human, animal, and environmental domains. This research approach emphasizes the interconnectedness of these areas, addressing complex health challenges that span ecosystems and societies. Our faculty and students engage in a broad spectrum of studies—from clinical and epidemiological research to basic science and social science investigations—aiming to prevent, predict, and manage health threats in a rapidly changing world.

One Health

This synergy between the Medical School, the School of Veterinary Medicine, and the School of Life and Health Sciences underscores our dedication to the One Health philosophy, fostering a research environment that is not only diverse and interdisciplinary, but also geared towards making a tangible impact on global health.

Research by School

The research at the Medical School focuses in areas of brain health and disease, cancer biology and oncology, regenerative medicine and genetics, infectious diseases, medical education, clinical communication and health psychology, medical physics and emerging technologies. Additionally, we are dedicated to environmental health, biostatistics, research methodology, public health policy, clinical and primary care research, reflecting our commitment to comprehensive health care and policy development.

SEVEN FACULTY MEMBERS AMONG TOP SCIENTISTS IN THE WORLD

According to the 2024 World’s Top 2% Scientists ranking list published by Stanford University, Professors Andrew Nicolaides, Christos Georgalas, Dan Fliss M., Dimitris Drikakis, Michael Davidson, Pascale Salameh, and Peter Karayiannis are among the top 2% most widely cited scientists in various disciplines.

The School of Veterinary Medicine espouses the holistic concept of One Health which emphasizes the relationship between the health of humans and animals within a healthy, sustainable environment and promotes the conduct of clinical, epidemiological, basic science and social science research.

Research Areas

The School of Veterinary Medicine complements these efforts with its research in Zoonotic Diseases, Antimicrobial Resistance, Veterinary Drug Discovery, and other critical areas. Its focus on Food Safety, Animal Nutrition, Small Animal Medicine, and Diagnostic Imaging contributes significantly to our understanding of animal health and its impact on human health.

Research Areas

Areas of interest include among others personalised medicine through the use of artificial intelligence and virtual reality tools, isolation and synthesis of bioactive molecules from natural products, biomarkers discovery, design of novel drug delivery systems and advanced nutritional and exercise regimes for chronic diseases.

Research Establishments

Three research establishments are currently operational under the School:

  • Research Centre for Exercise and Nutrition (RECEN)
  • Bioactive Molecules Research Centre (BioMoReC)
  • Non-coding RNA Research Laboratory (ncr-RESLA

International Collaborations and Initiatives

UNIC has become an ordinary member of the Virtual Physiological Human Institute (VPH), a non-profit organisation incorporated in Belgium, whose mission is to ensure that the Virtual Physiological Human is fully realised, universally adopted, and effectively used both in research and clinic. VPH is the Coordinator of the EDITH project, which is the EU initiative for the Human Virtual Twins, an application of AI in human physiology.
