Catherine D. Demoliou was awarded her B.Sc. in Biochemistry (1976, University of Toronto, Canada) and her PhD in Biochemistry (1981, McMaster University, Canada).  She received recognition as a University Teacher in 1990 (University of London, UK) and the CertEd in On-Line Education and Training (Institute of Education, University of London, UK) in 2003.  Her academic and research career includes (1980-85) Post Doctoral Scientist, Dept. of Biochemistry, Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine, University of London; (1985-89) Research Scientist, Molecular Neurobiology Unit, Medical. Research Council Center, Addenbrooke’s Hospital Medical School, University of Cambridge; (1989-91) Lecturer and (1991-96) Senior Lecturer, Imperial College, University of London, UK.  She was the Head of Cell Biology, Thrombosis Research Institute/National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College (1989-95) and held an Honorary Senior Lecturer positions at Imperial College between 1996 and 2001.

She joined the University of Nicosia (UNIC) in 1998 as an Associate Professor and promoted to Professor at the Department of Life and Health Sciences in 2001.  She was the Dean of the School of Sciences of the University of Nicosia between 2001 and 2007, and a member of the committee that worked on UNIC obtaining University Status. She also held until 2006 an Honorary Senior Scientist post at the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, in Nicosia.  She has successfully supervised several PhD graduates during her academic career. She has an extensive record of academic, administrative and consultancy experiences including several prizes for research she has supervised. She has training in cell and molecular biology technology and research experience in the fields of hormones, neurotransmitters and their receptors, in atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases and in ageing and olive-plant antioxidants and enzymes. She has been the recipient of national and European research grants in the UK and in Cyprus.  Currently, she is a Professor at the Department of Life and Health Sciences at the School of Science and Engineering of UNIC in Cyprus. Present research interests are in plant enzymes producing antioxidants and on R&D of applications for food authentication and food waste management. She is the founder of the idea for a Science Centre for Cyprus and together with all Cyprus Universities and the University of Cyprus as the Coordinator, have won a Phase I “Teaming” Horizon2020 project, towards the materialization of this endeavour.

She has been a member of the Biochemical Society (UK) since 1982 and of various other scientific societies and she has served as a referee in a number of scientific journals, conferences and as a reviewer for research funding organizations. She has been a member and Chair of the Bioethics Subcommittee on Clinical Research of the Cyprus National Bioethics Committee, a member of the Research and Training Subcommittee of the Cyprus Anti-narcotics Council and member of several other committees. Currently, she is an RPF appointed Cyprus Delegate of the Horizon 2020, Management Committee of the societal Challenge 2PC «Food Security, Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry, Marine, Maritime and Inland Water Research and the Bioeconomy».

Her record of publications includes refereed papers in internationally recognized scientific journals, various chapters in books and abstracts/presentation/papers at international conferences and has been a co-inventor in several patents.
