Athanasios Anagnostopoulos
Medical School
Department of Basic and Clinical Sciences
Dr. Anagnostopoulos has obtained Academic Titles from the Department of Biology and the School of Medicine of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece (NKUA). During his post graduate studies, as a SAFE network fellow, he underwent training in Prof. N. Avent’s Lab, the University of West England, U.K. His Ph.D. thesis in Obstetrics and Gynecology was completed with honours, a track record of 10 publications in international peer reviewed journals, and was the first to introduce the term “Proteomics” in Greek Academia. Dr. Anagnostopoulos was mentored by Prof. M. Fountoulakis (Hoffmann la Roche, Basel Swiss) and later on by Prof. D. Thanos (Harvard University-Medical School, Cambridge, MA, USA). He obtained postdoctoral fellowship and performed cutting-edge research at (i) the Department of Hematology and Oncology, Pedon “Aghia Sofia” Chlidren’s Hospital, School of Medicine, NKUA; (ii) the Department of Clinical Genetics, School of Medicine, NKUA; and (iii) the Department of Biotechnology, the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens (BRFAA). In 2021, he was awarded tenure and appointed Research Scientist B’–Associate Professor Level in the BRFAA. In 2024, he was awarded the position of Affiliated Researcher at the Oncology Unit of the 3rd Department of Internal Medicine, “Sotiria” Hospital of Thoracic Diseases, School of Medicine, NKUA.
Dr. Anagnostopoulos main research areas are oncology and the assessment of bioactive peptides’ effect on human metabolism. He establishes and supervises workflows based on an array of multi-omics platforms to discover biomarkers for the evaluation of prognosis of cancer patients. As Principal Investigator of a research team of aspiring young scientists, he investigates the effects of bioactive peptides, related to nutrition, on the metabolism of biological systems at the molecular level. He supervises the project “Study on non-small cell lung cancer patients by means of proteogenomics” a collaborative research plan between the “Sotiria” University Hospital of chest diseases and BRFAA.
Dr. Anagnostopoulos has a track-record of 80 publications, in major peer-reviewed biomedical scientific journals. His research has attracted funding from national funding bodies (e.g. GSRT, HFRI) as well as private-sector international pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries, for which he has supervised multi-institutional research projects. His work has received 1483 citations -Google Scholar H-Index 24, Scopus H-Index 25. He has supervised 3 Book Chapters, has delivered >50 invited lectures in international meetings and symposia and is owner of 4 National Patents.
