Gabriel Kalakoutis

Gabriel Kalakoutis is a Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Nicosia Medical School.

Dr Kalakoutis served as Director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Makarios Hospital in Nicosia until 2006. He currently practises as a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Aretaeio Hospital, a private hospital in Nicosia.

He graduated from the University of Edinburgh Medical School in 1974 and completed his specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at teaching hospitals in London. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), UK.

In collaboration with the late Professor Yury Verlinski of the Reproductive Genetics Institute in Chicago, USA, Dr Kalakoutis pioneered the use of preimplantation genetic diagnosis for thalassaemia, achieving the birth of healthy children following the procedure.
