Medical School launches public health lecture series at UNIC Athens
The Medical School recently launched a new Public Health lecture series at UNIC Athens, in collaboration with the Municipality of Elliniko-Argyroupoli. The series forms part of the Medical School’s ongoing effort to bridge the gap between academia, healthcare professionals, and the public, while encouraging informed discussion on prevention, early diagnosis and advances in modern treatment.
Open to the public, the series was inaugurated last week with a lecture by Stergios Douvetzemis, Breast Surgeon and Clinical Associate Professor at UNIC Athens Medical School. Titled Breast Cancer and Modern Treatment: The Importance of Screening, the presentation emphasised the importance of early detection in improving patient outcomes and highlighted the significant impact of regular screening on reducing mortality rates.
The event was well received, attracting a wide audience that included members of the public, medical students, and healthcare professionals.
Opening remarks were delivered by Panagiotis Skandalakis, President of UNIC Athens and Professor of Surgical Anatomy and Konstantinos Minopoulos, Deputy Mayor for Health and Social Services in the Municipality of Elliniko–Argyroupoli. Afroditi Gaitanarou, UNIC Health Coordinator at UNIC Athens, introduced the speaker and coordinated the session.
