The Medical School recently hosted the inaugural meeting of the €400,000 Erasmus+ funded Virtual Realities in Medical Education (ViR-MEd) project, which will employ virtual reality in clinical training. Representatives from two European partner institutions attended the launch.

The Medical School team comprises Dr Achilleas Pavlou as the primary investigator, working with Professors Alexia Papageorgiou, Stelios Georgiades, and Dr Panagiota Andreou. Partner institutions include the National University of Ireland Galway and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Two Cyprus-based companies, Vimodo Ltd and Silversky3D VR Technologies Ltd, provide technical support.

The project will create virtual reality simulations using ChatGPT’s API, allowing medical students to practice their clinical communication skills and prepare for Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs). Students can access these training tools remotely, including from home.

The VR platform works with affordable VR goggles and smartphones as VR screens, making the training accessible to more students.
