Research Project Description:
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major health problem, as it affects 10% of the global population and kills millions of patients every year. One of the major barriers for the development of efficient treatments for CKD, is the inability of existing experimental systems to effectively model the complex structure and function of the human glomerular filtration barrier (the kidney’s filtering unit). In this project, we will combine stem cell biology, engineering, fluidic and biomaterial technologies, to develop a human glomerulus on chip that can be efficiently used for modelling and studying kidney diseases.
