BRIEF SUMMARY

In this lecture, Professor Sir Sabaratnam Arulkumaran will present the third edition of his book, ‘Best Practice in Labour and Delivery’, outlining its purpose and key updates.

The textbook, which was recently published by Cambridge University Press, is an encompassing reference covering essential information relating to childbirth, offering clear practical guidance on all aspects of labour and delivery.

Professor Arulkumaran will also highlight selected clinical themes such as decision-making in labour, teamwork and patient safety, and reflect on how best practice translates from textbook guidance to a real labour ward setting.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Sir Sabaratnam Arulkumaran is a Professor of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the University of Nicosia Medical School, Professor Emeritus at City St George’s, University of London, and Visiting Professor at Imperial College, London. Professor Arulkumaran graduated with an honours MBBS degree and a Diploma in Child Health from the University of Ceylon. He then obtained his MD and PhD by research from the National University of Singapore.

He is former president of the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (2012-2015), the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (2007-2010) and the British Medical Association (2012-2014).

Professor Arulkumaran is the author of 38 books, 165 chapters, and more than 300 publications in leading journals. He is the editor-in-chief of ‘Best Practice & Research in Clinical Obstetrics & Gynaecology’ since 1998 for 20 years and a member of the editorial board of many international obstetric and gynaecological journals.

Sir Sabaratnam’s research and clinical interests are in understanding and improving the quality of life for women and newborn babies. In recognition of Services to Medicine & Health, he was awarded the Knight Bachelor by Her Majesty the Queen of the United Kingdom in her Birthday Honours List in June 2009.
