UNIC Faculty Member’s Paper Top-Cited in Computation in 2020-2021
The paper on “Machine-Learning Methods for Computational Science and Engineering” by Professor Dimitris Drikakis et al. has been shortlisted for the “Computation 2020 Best Paper Award”
The paper on “Machine-Learning Methods for Computational Science and Engineering” by Professor Dimitris Drikakis et al. (https://www.mdpi.com/2079-3197/8/1/15) was one of the most viewed papers in 2020 and top-cited in the last two years in Computation, a peer-reviewed monthly journal of computational science and engineering. Moreover, the paper has been shortlisted for the “Computation 2020 Best Paper Awards”, the winner of which will be announced in March 2022.
The paper provides a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art in Machine Learning (ML) for computational science and engineering. The authors discuss how ML can speed up or improve the quality of simulation techniques such as computational fluid dynamics, molecular dynamics, and structural analysis. They explore the ability of ML to produce computationally efficient surrogate models that circumvent the need for the more expensive simulation techniques entirely. Furthermore, they elaborate on how scientists can use ML to process large amounts of data in engineering, medicine, astronomy, and computing. The paper also reviews how Machine Learning could be used to create more realistic and responsive virtual reality applications.
This recognition adds another accolade to Professor Drikakis’s academic and research reputation and achievements, while attesting to the internationalisation and excellence of the University of Nicosia.

It publishes reviews, regular research papers, and communications, aimed at encouraging scientists to publish their experimental and theoretical research in as much detail as possible. About Professor Dimitris Drikakis
Professor Dimitris Drikakis is a faculty member at the Medical School and the School of Sciences and Engineering of the University of Nicosia, also serving as the University’s Vice President of Global Partnerships, and the Executive Director of Research and Innovation.
Before joining UNIC, Prof. Drikakis held academic and executive posts as Professor, Executive Dean, and Head of Department at various UK universities for 24 years. He also held senior academic and research posts in Germany and France. He was the winner of the Innovator of the Year Award by the UK’s Institute of Innovation and Knowledge Exchange for nanotechnology and twice the recipient of the William Penny Fellowship by the UK’s Atomic establishment for his computational science modelling.
Prof. Drikakis has published over 440 papers and two books. He has an h-index 44 (Scopus) & 52 (Google Scholar), classifying him, according to a recent publication by Stanford University, on the list of 100,000 top-scientists worldwide (correspondingly in the top 2% of scientists in their field internationally) over several years of his career.
