On March 21, 2025, from 9:00 to 20:00, Cyprus will celebrate the IX edition of the Italian Design Day in the World with this year’s theme “Inequalities, Design for a Better Life”.
The Italian Embassy in Nicosia, in collaboration with the University of Nicosia’s Department of Architecture, will host renowned Italian architect Mario Trimarchi from ADI Milan, who together with Prof. Alessandra Swiny (University of Nicosia) will conduct a masterclass and deliver a thought-provoking lecture on design’s role in addressing inequalities.
The theme of this year’s event emphasizes design’s evolution from an elitist product to a collective and shared process that significantly impacts everyone’s life and experience.
This year’s event will take place at the University of Nicosia, Department of Architecture – UNIC Architecture Research Center (ARC – Michail Georgalla, 2409 Engomi).
The event is structured in two main segments:
Morning Masterclass (9:00)
- Exclusive session for Department of Architecture students
- Led by Arch. Mario Trimarchi and Prof. Alessandra Swiny

Evening Lecture (18:00)
- Welcome address by the Ambassador of Italy, Federica Ferrari Bravo
- Introduction to Italian Design Day by Professor Alessandra Swiny
- Main lecture by Arch. Mario Trimarchi: “Could Poetry in Design Reduce Inequalities?”
- Open to the public

Visitors can explore the exhibition “PINK: Women of Italian Graphic Design. From the Origins to Contemporaneity” in the University atrium, running until April 11th.
The Italian Design Day is an annual theme-based review launched in 2017 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (the Farnesina), in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture. Through a network of Embassies, Consulates, Italian Cultural Institutes, and ICE Offices abroad, the initiative promotes Italian design excellence and creativity worldwide, serving as a vital platform for international dialogue and cultural exchange.
