From Cyprus to Tenerife: Tracking goat health

Associate Professor of Cattle & Herd Medicine Konstantinos Arsenopoulos attended recently the European Regional Conference of the International Goat Association (IGA) in Tenerife, Spain.
Dr Arsenopoulos presented research findings from Greek and Cypriot dairy goat populations, including data about haemonchosis in Greek dairy goats, insights into lungworm infections in Cyprus’s dairy goat industry, and the prevalence and characterization of pulmonary lesions in adult dairy goats slaughtered in Cyprus.
‘The conference demonstrated the value of collaborative research across Mediterranean countries. Our findings on dairy goat populations will help develop standardised protocols for disease surveillance across the region’ said Dr Arsenopoulos.
Dr Konstantinos Arsenopoulos and Dr George Nikolaou worked with third-year veterinary student Rebecca Panayi who conducted pulmonary examinations at local abattoirs, classifying lesions as parasitic, bacterial, or viral.
‘Working with Dr Nikolaou and Dr Arsenopoulos helped me put theory into practice. I learned so much from this hands -on experience’, said Panayi.
The conference, from 14-17 May 2025, brought together researchers, veterinarians, extension agents, producers and students from Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, Greece and Cyprus. Discussions focused on diseases, management practices, and the development of specialists in the field.
The UNIC team plans to expand their research to include more Mediterranean countries, advance their diagnostics for lungworms, and develop training modules in abattoir pathology. This approach aims to strengthen regional cooperation and establish protocols across Mediterranean countries.
