Caitlin McAllister

Class of 2028, Canada

I always knew I wanted to become a veterinarian. I never imagined that I would find myself in Cyprus, about 9000 km away from my home in Ontario, Canada. While Canadian veterinary schools are indeed highly competitive, after several attempts that didn’t go as planned, I was fortunate to find a promising opportunity in Nicosia and took a leap of faith. Cyprus has been an indescribable experience.

The lack of any appreciable winter and year-round sunshine was a definite plus, but what stands out the most is the approachable faculty and staff at UNIC, and the lengths they go to in order for us to get the most out of our time here. Academically, the classes are rigorous, and the testing as onerous as one would expect of any of the top-tiered more-established schools. Interspersed between intensive studies are opportunities for us to explore and grow as people, as well as to engage with the cultural beauty of this unique island through various outings, courtesy of the school. From a professional standpoint, UNIC does not disappoint. Seminars are arranged sometimes several times per month for students to broaden their scope of the veterinary field. This has allowed me to connect with and learn from multiple individuals held in high regard within the industry. When I graduate, I intend to return to Canada, but I know that my experiences here will have made me a better and more resilient veterinarian than I ever could have been had I gone elsewhere.

The anatomy lab facilities for the DVM programme have been a standout highlight of my education. The state-of-the-art equipment and technology used in the lab allow for hands-on learning experiences that are both engaging and effective. In addition, the lab instructors are knowledgeable and passionate about their work, and they go above and beyond of what is required to ensure that each student understands the material thoroughly.

Apart from being spacious, clean and well-maintained, the anatomy lab facilities are providing a comfortable and safe environment for learning. The lab allows me to apply my knowledge in a practical setting and helps me to develop critical thinking, skills that will be essential in my future career as a veterinarian.

I highly recommend the DVM programme of the University of Nicosia to anyone interested in pursuing a career in veterinary medicine.

My academic journey at the University of Nicosia has been exceptional. The university’s commitment to providing a comprehensive education is evident in every aspect of our studies. One standout feature of the programme is the enthusiastic and dedicated lecturers. Their passion for the subject matter is clear, and they make each lecture engaging as well as supportive. They instil in us not just technical expertise, but also the pillars of empathy, professionalism, integrity, and ethics.

Moreover, the emphasis on practical, hands-on experience bridges the gap between theory and real-world application. From anatomy practicals to laboratory sessions, we are exposed weekly to diverse scenarios that prepare us for the veterinary profession.

I am grateful for the opportunities and support I have received here, and I highly recommend the University of Nicosia to aspiring veterinarians seeking a meaningful education.

The health library is a perfect place to study. Its excellent structural design, lighting and acoustics make it easy to focus and concentrate. The on-shelf books and the electronic access to an extensive collection of veterinary medicine databases, e-books and journals make it one of my favourite places on campus when studying.
