Brain on Fire: Management of Seizure Emergencies in Dogs and Cats

BRIEF SUMMARY

The lecture will highlight recent guidelines on the management of seizure emergencies in dogs and cats. It will also include a concise overview of relevant pathophysiology and imaging considerations.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr Marios Charalambous is an ABVS American, EBVS European and RCVS-recognised specialist in veterinary neurology. Following completion of his small animal internship at the Queen’s Veterinary School Hospital, University of Cambridge (UK), he worked as a general and emergency clinician in private practice in the UK. During this period, he obtained a postgraduate diploma in advanced neuroimaging from the UCL Institute of Neurology (UK).

Dr Charalambous began his neurology training at Cornell University (USA) and subsequently joined Ghent University (Belgium), where he completed an ACVIM- and ECVN-approved residency in neurology. After successfully obtaining credentials and passing examinations independently for both the American and European Colleges, he also completed a PhD at Ghent University, focusing on innovative therapies for epileptic seizure disorders.

Throughout his career, Dr Charalambous has undertaken various training programmes and educational courses in the UK, USA and internationally. He is a prolific author, with numerous scientific articles in high-impact journals and contributions to book chapters. He has also lectured at many courses and conferences worldwide. Notably, he served as primary author and Chair of the first ACVIM Consensus Statement on the management of canine and feline emergency seizure disorders.

Dr Charalambous is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK) and has served as a representative of the European Society of Veterinary Neurology (ESVN). He is currently Chair of the ACVIM Neurology Credentials Committee.

Dr Charalambous currently works as a referral neurology consultant at Blaise Referral Hospital in Birmingham (UK). He is also a Research Associate at the University of Veterinary Medicine (TiHo), Hannover (Germany), and a Visiting Professor at the University of Nicosia (Cyprus).
