Workers Are Using AI – So Why Are They Still Worried
As GenAI spreads through the workplace, the real challenge may be less about adoption than whether employees understand what is changing, why it matters and how they will be supported.
A July 2026 report from idealis Advisory and CivicScience—recently covered by Campus Technology, with links to both below—found that AI adoption is racing ahead of reassurance: 62% of U.S. workers now use GenAI professionally, yet 72% of users report employment concern, only about half see meaningful improvements in their work, and just 40% have clear company guidelines.
Taken together, the findings suggest that concern may be less about using AI itself than about uncertainty: which tasks and roles will change, how productivity gains will reshape workloads, skills and career pathways, and what reskilling support employees will receive.
The report also argues that AI evolves faster than workers can gain mastery. As people learn one tool, a new version or capability appears, which may help explain why rising adoption has not reduced concern.
A practical response would be to treat AI adoption as an ongoing process of communication and learning.
- Keep employees informed about how AI is being introduced across the organization, with early, role-specific updates for those directly affected.
- Offer flexible training through one-to-one support, group sessions and hands-on practice.
- Listen and review by gathering employee feedback and regularly evaluating both the training and the AI technologies in use.
- Share what works across teams, using trained internal AI champions to spread good practice and support colleagues.
This would not necessarily eliminate employment concern, but it could make change more visible, learning more accessible and implementation more responsive.
