Explore, Experiment, and Learn: Introducing the Blackboard Sandbox Course

AILC is excited to introduce a Blackboard Sandbox Course—a dedicated space where lecturers and staff can safely explore, experiment, and build confidence with the new platform.

What Is the Sandbox Course?

The Blackboard Sandbox Course is a practice environment designed exclusively for instructors and staff to test out Blackboard’s tools, layouts, and features without affecting any live courses or student data. It’s your chance to “play” with Blackboard — to try things out, make mistakes, and learn by doing.

What You’ll Find Inside

The course, titled How to Use Blackboard as Instructor, is organized to guide you step by step through Blackboard’s core functions. The content covers both fundamental and advanced instructor tools, including:

  • Content Creation – Learn how to add materials, use folders, create documents, and organize your course structure.

  • Discussions and Groups – Practice setting up forums and student collaboration spaces.

  • Assessment Tools – Explore how to create and manage tests, assignments, and forms, as well as how to use the Gradebook.

  • AI and Automation Features – Experiment with Blackboard’s AI tools, including auto-generating modules and AI conversation activities.

  • Pre-Made Examples – Review sample tests, assignments, forms, and discussions to see what a fully built-out Blackboard course looks like.

The course also links directly to YouTube tutorials for instructors, providing quick access to visual guides and demonstrations.

Why Use the Sandbox?

The sandbox is a risk-free space that helps you:

  • Gain hands-on experience before teaching with Blackboard

  • Build familiarity with the instructor interface

  • Explore new tools like AI Conversations or automated content creation

  • Develop confidence in course setup and content management

You can freely add, edit, and delete materials — it’s your personal test environment.

How to Get Started

If you don’t yet have access to the Sandbox Course, please contact the AI Learning Centre. Once enrolled, you can begin exploring immediately. We encourage all instructors to set aside time to experiment with Blackboard before the official rollout of the new system.

Tip: Treat the sandbox as your creative lab. Try replicating one of your existing Moodle courses, test the AI content generator, or experiment with new assessment workflows.

Need help? You’ll find built-in guides, how-to documents, and links to official Blackboard resources directly inside the course.
