Living and Studying in Nicosia, Cyprus

The capital of Cyprus, Nicosia, is a vibrant city, where the ancient past and contemporary present blend seamlessly. This popular destination for over 20,000 university students has something of interest for everyone, with a mix of events, sights, shopping, sports, arts and culture, catering to a multitude of tastes. Its unique diversity and multiculturalism make it a welcoming home away from home for all students looking to immerse themselves into the city.

Cyprus is situated in the north-eastern corner of the Mediterranean, at the meeting point of Europe, Asia and Africa. Since the dawn of history, Cyprus has been one of the most interesting areas of the region, with a rich and visible cultural history. Ancient Greeks, Egyptians and Romans, along with Crusaders, Byzantines, Franks and Ottomans have all left a powerful legacy for the modern visitor to see and admire.

Cyprus is endowed with golden beaches, virgin green forests and other natural wonders. Cyprus is one of the safest countries in the world and the Cypriot people are famous for the warm and friendly welcome they extend to visitors. Like Singapore and Hong Kong, Cyprus is an important financial and business centre, with over 70% of the economy focused on services. The main industries in Cyprus are financial and professional services, banking, investment management, shipping, tourism and real estate.

Cyprus hosts the financial infrastructure for thousands of multinational companies due to its stable and modern legal and tax environment, highly educated workforce, and excellent quality of life (Cyprus has the highest number of chartered/certified accountants per-capita in the world).

On the tourism side, Cyprus has over 1,000 hotels and resorts and one of the most developed tourism infrastructures per-capita in the world. Cyprus is also a global maritime hub. It is the 2nd largest ship management centre in the world, responsible for maintaining and operating a large percentage of the world’s fleets. It also has the 3rd largest merchant fleet in the EU.

UNIC has very close ties to Cyprus industry, giving students the opportunity to gain real-life knowledge and experience.

Living and Studying in London, UK

London is one of the world’s most exciting cities. City, University of London’s central yet quiet location means our students benefit from all that the city has to offer.

Named the best city worldwide in which to study by QS Best Student Cities 2018, London is described as “a nerve-centre of global academia”. But it’s not just all work and no play. However you like to spend your free time, life at City offers a huge range of opportunities for international students.

City is located in Islington with excellent transport links, with rail and underground stations close by and the option of walking to many of London’s attractions. London is also the gateway to the rest of the UK, Europe and the world, providing international students with opportunities to explore and discover further afield.

Accommodation in London

All students can choose to live in one of City’s modern and centrally located halls of residence. Moving to a big city can seem intimidating but it’s much easier if you have arranged somewhere to live that is comfortable and close to other students. City offers a range of accommodation, including contemporary and newly refurbished halls of residence a short walk from the main City buildings, as well as private accommodation. All prospective full-time students can apply for a place in the halls of residence and City guarantees one to all first-year undergraduates who accept a place at City before the accommodation deadline. Whether you want to live in halls or privately rented housing, City’s Student Centre’s Accommodation team can help.

Halls of Residence
Living with other students provides a great opportunity to meet new people from different courses and backgrounds. City has self-catered halls of residence located only a short walk from the main City buildings. Each with a team of management staff, halls have private, modern study bedrooms and communal living spaces where you can cook, relax and feel at home. If you do not want a place in halls, the University of London Private Housing Services can provide information to help you find accommodation in the private sector. Ideally you would need to view private housing prior to booking it. July and August are the best times to find private accommodation in London for the following academic year. Costs of private accommodation in central London can be expensive. Keep in mind that your heating, electricity and hot water expenses will probably not be included as part of your rent and you will also have to pay a refundable deposit. It may be less expensive to live further away, but this will mean you will have travel costs. For an idea of what you may have to pay and a private housing guide, visit:

University of London Housing Services
City students have full access to Private Housing Advisors, legal housing advice, a contract checking service and various housing events held throughout the year.
