It also outlines the physicochemical and microbiological characteristics required for water to be considered suitable for livestock and poultry.

Among its main points, the paper notes that water makes up a substantial proportion of body weight in farm animals and plays an essential part in nutrient transport, thermoregulation and waste elimination. It also underlines that poor water quality can affect feed intake, animal performance and welfare.

Commenting on the publication, first author Dr Arsenopoulos said: ‘This review demonstrates that ensuring continuous access to adequate quantities of safe, high-quality water is essential for optimising animal health, productivity, and welfare. Such practices should be integrated into routine farm management and regulatory frameworks’.

He added that the publication also marks the start of a new international collaboration with Professor John O’Doherty from the School of Agriculture and Food Science at University College Dublin, and noted that Dionie Smith Diakidi contributed to the review through the Student Internship Research Programme.

[34,56,57

post-29539","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-school-of-veterinary-medicine","category-unic-health
["GET
https://www.unic.ac.cy/vet/2026/05/05/vet-school-joins-research-project-on-regenerative-agriculture-in-norway/?lang=en
https://www.unic.ac.cy/vet/2026/05/05/vet-school-joins-research-project-on-regenerative-agriculture-in-norway/

Vet School joins research project on regenerative agriculture in Norway

The School of Veterinary Medicine is participating in a newly funded research project in collaboration with veterinary partners in Norway.

The project is being carried out with Norwegian Private Veterinary Services, UiT The Arctic University of Norway, and the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. It will examine regenerative agriculture and microbiome science, with a focus on farm animals and soil health.

Titled Mapping the microbiota in regenerative farm animals: strategies for optimal soil transplantation in Sørøya/Finnmark, the project is supported by the FORREGION-Finnmark programme. It brings together researchers from Cyprus and Norway to study microbiota in a regenerative farming setting.

The research is led by Dr Leon Cantas of Norwegian Private Veterinary Services. At the University of Nicosia School of Veterinary Medicine, the project is led by Drs Eleni Gentekaki and Daphne Mavrides. The study will take place at Gammelgården, a regenerative farm on Sørøya in northern Norway.

Using metagenomic analysis alongside traditional farming knowledge, the research will examine the role of the microbiome in soil regeneration and animal health. It will also compare findings from Norway with data from farms in Cyprus, allowing researchers to explore how different environmental conditions may affect microbiome composition and farming outcomes.

Commenting on the project, Drs Gentekaki and Mavrides said: ‘This initiative will strengthen collaboration while examining links between soil, animal, and public health within the One Health framework. It will also be of interest to compare our previous results from Cyprus with findings from this Norwegian farm’.

In parallel, fourth year DVM student Rebecca Panayi will undertake an extramural studies placement in Norway under the supervision of Dr Leon Cantas, where she will gain clinical experience at his private veterinary clinic. A major review article led by Panagiotis Karanis, Professor of Anatomy at the University of Nicosia Medical School, brings together, for the first time, all available data on ticks and tick borne pathogens in Greece over the past century. The study, published in the MDPI journal Microorganisms under the title ‘Tick Borne Pathogens and Diseases in Greece’ (Efstratiou, A., Karanis, G., Karanis, P., 2021), catalogues the tick species present in the country, the diseases they transmit, and the environmental conditions that favour their spread.

The review analyses studies published up to the end of 2020, drawing from MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, and European surveillance systems. The authors identify 26 species and subspecies of hard ticks (Ixodidae) parasitising domestic animals and humans in Greece. Fourteen of these are known carriers of pathogens, and most of those carry more than one pathogen. The paper summarises what is known about viral infections such as tick borne encephalitis and Crimean Congo haemorrhagic fever, bacterial diseases caused by Rickettsia, Anaplasma, and Borrelia species, and protozoan infections including Babesia and Theileria, which are particularly important for livestock and equine health. It also documents where these ticks and pathogens have been found, which animal hosts they parasitise, and in which regions of Greece human and animal infections have been reported.

Commenting on the findings, Professor Karanis noted that Greece’s Mediterranean climate and ongoing environmental change are creating favourable conditions for ticks and the pathogens they carry. Mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers, together with increasing dry spells and rising temperatures, are likely to shift tick distributions and lengthen the period during which they are active.

‘Many of the tick species present in Greece are already recognised vectors of important human and veterinary pathogens,’ he explained, ‘yet surveillance and laboratory data remain fragmented. This raises the risk of under diagnosis and under reporting, and makes it more difficult to anticipate and manage future outbreaks’.

The review adopts a One Health perspective, underlining how human, animal, and environmental health are closely interconnected. Tick borne pathogens affect people, livestock, pets, and wildlife, and their spread is influenced by farming practices, land use, tourism, and the movement of animals and goods.
