Dr Plioukas graduated (2006) as first (1st) in the Class of 2001 in the School of Pharmacy (Best Grade), and gained his Doctorate [(Grade: 10/10 – Classification EXCELLENT (First Class Honours with Distinction)] in the School of Pharmacy, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. He gained his PhD in the field of Phytochemistry – Pharmacognosy (Laboratory of Natural Products, Department of Pharmacognosy & Pharmacology, School of Pharmacy) with the thesis entitled “Phytochemical Analysis of Tephrosia humilis (Fabaceae) with the in vitro evaluation of the antioxidant activity and the aldose reductase inhibition of the aerial parts of the plant”. He was also awarded and won the scholarship from the Greek State Scholarship Foundation (I.K.Y.) as the Best Grades Student for the academic years 2001-2002, 2002-2003, 2003-2004.
Dr Plioukas is a Faculty Member at the University of Nicosia (Pharmacy Programme) since 2016. He also worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Department of Aromatic and Medicinal Plants (Institute of Plant Breeding and Plant Resources) at the Hellenic Agricultural Organization “DEMETER” (former “National Agricultural Research Foundation”) and as a Group Leader and Laboratory Supervisor Researcher in the Laboratory of Natural Products (School of Pharmacy, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki) in innovative experimental Projects in the field of Natural Products. He was also an Instructor in Seminars of Expertise in Pharmaceutical & Aromatic Plants and Preparation of Cosmetic Formulations and worked as a Pharmacist in a private hospital.
Dr Plioukas’ research interests are in the areas of Chemistry of Natural Products, Aromatic and Pharmaceutical Plants, Pharmacognosy. The main focus of his research is directed on natural products with pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, cosmetic and agrochemical interest, with the aim to yield added value products. He is an expert in phytochemical analysis with the use of preparative techniques and analytical methods. Dr Plioukas is also interested in the fields of Ethnobotany, Ethnopharmacology and the manufacture of cosmetic preparations.
