From Nicosia to Athens: Tropical Medicine lectures draw strong interest across both campuses<\/h1>\n

The Medical School recently had the pleasure of hosting two lectures on Tropical Medicine by Rev. Archimandrite Anastasios Poyiadjis, Honorary Professor of Tropical Medicine at the Medical School, first in Nicosia on 26 March and then in Athens on 31 March, bringing together students and faculty across both campuses.<\/p>\n

With attendance exceeding 130 in total, the lectures offered participants a valuable opportunity to learn from the Archimandrite\u2019s extensive experience as both a missionary priest and physician. Since 1993, he has dedicated much of his life to medical and pastoral service in several African countries, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, and Madagascar. Over the past 16 years, his work has been based in Madagascar.<\/p>\n

The lectures gave attendees deeper insight into Tropical Medicine, a branch of medicine concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, and management of communicable and non-communicable diseases prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions. Drawing on his clinical and humanitarian work in rural Madagascar, the Archimandrite spoke about a wide range of health challenges commonly encountered in such settings.<\/p>\n

These included parasitic and infectious diseases such as malaria and schistosomiasis, as well as conditions linked to environmental and working conditions, nutritional deficiencies, sanitation-related factors, and limited access to safe drinking water. Particular attention was also given to major public health concerns such as maternal and child mortality and malnutrition.<\/p>\n

The lectures also explored the broader realities and challenges of practising medicine in low-resource settings, offering important perspectives for students and faculty with an interest in global health and tropical medicine.<\/p>\n

During the sessions, Rev. Archimandrite Anastasios Poyiadjis also expressed his sincere thanks to the University of Nicosia for its continuous support, both financially and in terms of infrastructure, including the provision of furniture used to set up the laboratory of the clinic in Tulear, prenatal screening<\/h1>\n<p>Dr Panagiota Nakou, Lecturer in Medical Ethics at the Medical School, has recently published a new article in Clinical Ethics, a quarterly peer-reviewed journal published by Sage Publications.<\/p>\n<p>Her article, titled \u2018Empowering women\u2019s choice in the new era of non-invasive prenatal testing methods: Opting for routine perinatal care information over routine screening\u2019, re-examines the role of routine prenatal testing in promoting women\u2019s reproductive autonomy.<\/p>\n<p>In the paper, Dr Nakou argues that the routine offering of prenatal screening may inadvertently undermine genuine autonomous decision-making. She suggests that, rather than routinely offering tests such as non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), healthcare systems should first provide high-quality counselling, enabling women to reflect on their values and preferences before deciding whether to undergo testing.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Nakou explains: ‘Autonomous decision-making amidst the challenges of new screening and testing methods requires more than providing accurate, balanced, and non-directive information’. She therefore proposes a reorientation of prenatal care, where routine, high-quality counselling comes before the offer of screening, allowing women to explore their values, expectations, and concerns in advance. Through these efforts, the club seeks to promote healthier lifestyles and combat misinformation surrounding health and well-being.<\/p>\n<p>The session was delivered by graduate-entry MD students Omar Itani and Naomi Rose Shenouda, and undergraduate-entry MD students Haseena Rahman and Dimitrios Papoulias. Their presentation explored the energy balance equation, macro- and micronutrients, and the role of exercise in maintaining health. It also addressed broader social issues related to healthcare, including the influence of social media on young people\u2019s perceptions of health and the rise of eating disorders.<\/p>\n<p>The Mobile Clinic Club\u2019s advisor, Dr Danagra Ikossi, provided guidance to the students in preparing their presentation, while the club\u2019s President, Nour Abdelaziz, delivered the opening remarks. It provides students with the opportunity to present their work to peers and faculty through oral and e-poster presentations.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s conference featured eleven student oral presentations and nine e-poster presentations, showcasing a broad range of topics, from clinical case reports and systematic reviews to artificial intelligence applications and biomedical innovation.<\/p>\n<p>A special highlight of the programme was a presentation by the team that won the 2025 Junior Achievement StartUp Programme and represented Cyprus at the Gen-E 2025 European Entrepreneurship Festival in Athens in July 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the start of the conference, Prof. Constantinos Deltas, Director of Research at UNIC Health, addressed participants and underscored the importance of research in medical practice. He noted that research-oriented thinking is a key attribute for the next generation of clinicians.<\/p>\n<p>With strong participation from both students and faculty, the conference offered a dynamic platform for the exchange of ideas, interdisciplinary interaction, networking, and academic development, further contributing to the vibrant scholarly community at UNIC Health.<\/p>\n<p>The event concluded with an award ceremony recognising outstanding student contributions.<\/p>\n<p>Graduate-entry MD Year 3 student Samuel Pana Arda won the ‘Best Oral Presentation’ and the ‘Students\u2019 Choice’ awards, while undergraduate-entry MD Year 4 student Maria Antonia Kalatta won the ‘Best e-Poster Presentation’ award. Meanwhile, undergraduate-entry MD Year 4 student Aikaterini Katramadou won the ‘Dr Lakis C. on a complex case<\/h1>\n<p>In line with the University\u2019s interdisciplinary learning approach, an innovative Interprofessional Learning (IPL) activity was held last Monday at the initiative of Dr Danny Alon Ellenbogen, Clinical Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the Medical School and Dr Monica Nikitara, Assistant Professor at the School of Life and Health Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>The session brought together Year 5 Medical students and Year 2 Nursing students, who formed Multidisciplinary Teams (MDTs) to address a complex case of multimorbidity using a simulated patient.<\/p>\n<p>Designed to replicate real-world clinical practice, the session moved beyond theoretical learning and challenged students to reconcile complex pharmacological reasoning with the practical realities of a patient\u2019s daily life.<\/p>\n<p>Medical students focused on identifying prescribing cascades \u2014 where a medication is prescribed to treat the side effect of another drug \u2014 and on adjusting regimens in the context of declining renal function. At the same time, nursing students advocated for the patient\u2019s holistic needs and everyday challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the session, Dr Danny Alon Ellenbogen said: \u2018The most important outcome of the session was seeing the teams develop a shared voice and work together to produce a single, patient-centred care plan that prioritised quality of life over polypharmacy. The level of engagement throughout the day also showed that when students learn with and from one another, patient care is strengthened\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Monica Nikitara added: \u2018This activity gave students the opportunity to experience how collaborative practice works in realistic clinical settings. This year\u2019s theme reflected the conference\u2019s focus on linking core medical principles with practical skills and current approaches in healthcare.<\/p>\n<p>The morning programme featured a series of talks covering a range of topics in medicine and medical practice. Prof. Panos Economou spoke on What Makes a Surgical Career Unique, while Dr Alexander Kroushovski addressed The Importance of Remaining Human and Empathetic in Demanding Clinical Settings. Dr Stavros Constantinou spoke about Pathways into Neurosurgery, and Dr Katherine Annabel Alexander discussed The Transition from Medical Training into Medical Teaching. The final talk of the morning was delivered by Prof. Nicos Skordis, who addressed The Need for Future Doctors to Better Understand the Health Needs of Transgender People.<\/p>\n<p>In the afternoon, the conference moved into a series of interactive workshops delivered in collaboration with student societies and clubs across UNIC Health. These included sessions on Surgical and Tendon Repair, Field Trauma and Airway Skills, ECG to Bypass, Breast Biopsy and Skills, Paediatric Emergency Scenarios, Skin Grafting and Flaps, eFAST: Rapid Imaging, VR Neuroanatomy, and Fracture to Fixation.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop sessions gave students the opportunity to apply theory in practice, develop clinical skills and learn in a more hands-on setting. She described each stage of the process – collection, testing, processing, storage, distribution, and administration – highlighting the processes that guarantee safe and effective transfusions.<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Politou also discussed blood donor eligibility criteria and the importance of proper blood analysis and storage to ensure safety and quality throughout the transfusion process. In addition, she spoke about the upcoming voluntary blood drive at UNIC Athens, where medical students will participate as ambassadors and facilitators.<\/p>\n<p>The lecture captured the students\u2019 interest and helped raise awareness about the importance of voluntary blood donation. brain-heart biomarkers in Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/h1>\n<p>The University of Nicosia is pleased to announce a new peer-reviewed publication on a promising approach to Alzheimer\u2019s disease research that examines how brain activity and heart function can be studied together to support earlier detection and monitoring.<\/p>\n<p>The review focuses on the combined use of EEG and heart rate variability as an integrated biomarker framework for Alzheimer\u2019s disease, with findings suggesting that brain-heart coupling may offer improved sensitivity in identifying early cognitive decline.<\/p>\n<p>Contributing to the publication are Professor Stelios Georgiades, Professor Aleksandar Jovanovic, and Dr Nicoletta Nicolaou from the UNIC Medical School, Dr George Loucaides from the School of Life and Health Sciences, and first author, PhD candidate with the Medical School, Benson Botchway.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Nicoletta Nicolaou commented: \u2018This publication reflects the growing importance of interdisciplinary research in understanding complex conditions such as Alzheimer\u2019s disease.
