The ceremony brought together graduates, faculty, families and distinguished guests from around the world.

A key moment of the ceremony was the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Science (Medicine) degree upon internationally renowned physician and scientist Dr Eric Topol, Founder and Director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute and one of the world’s leading authorities on artificial intelligence in medicine. Delivering the commencement address, Dr Topol encouraged graduates to embrace the unprecedented opportunities that lie ahead while never losing sight of medicine’s most fundamental purpose: caring for people.

Describing the graduates as ‘a new generation of physicians and scientists entering a world in transition’, Topol spoke of the transformative role that artificial intelligence will play in healthcare—from improving diagnosis and personalising prevention to reducing administrative burdens and expanding access to medical knowledge. Yet, he stressed that technology can never replace empathy, trust and the human connection between doctor and patient.

‘The fundamental goals of medicine will never change’, he said. ‘The secret of the care of the patient is in caring for the patient’.

Looking ahead, Topol painted an optimistic vision of healthcare in which AI, genomics and preventive medicine will enable physicians to predict and prevent many of today’s most common diseases before they develop. He urged graduates to remain curious throughout their careers, embrace lifelong learning, communicate science responsibly and never be afraid to reinvent themselves as medicine continues to evolve.

Earlier in the ceremony, Medical School Dean Professor Adonis Ioannides congratulated the graduands on reaching an important milestone, recognising the dedication, resilience and commitment that had brought them to this moment. He encouraged them to uphold the highest standards of professionalism while serving patients and society with integrity and compassion.

Addressing the graduates, University of Nicosia Rector Professor Philippos Pouyioutas highlighted the University’s continued commitment to academic excellence, innovation and global engagement. During the graduation ceremony, Dr Tedros was awarded an honorary Doctor of Medicine degree.

This was the 10th graduation ceremony of the Medical School, attended by the Minister of Health, Mr Michalis Damianou, the Minister of Interior, Mr Konstantinos Ioannou, the Vice Chancellor of St George’s, University of London, Professor Jenny Higham, ambassadors from various countries in Cyprus, and other distinguished guests, as well as hundreds of relatives and friends of the graduates who travelled to Cyprus from all continents to attend the ceremony.

In his speech, Dr Ghebreyesus stated: “As we are in every country, WHO is committed to supporting the Government of Cyprus in any way we can to promote, provide and protect the health of the people of this island.” He also reminded that Cyprus has been hosting the newest of the 153 WHO country offices since last year.

Addressing the Minister of Health and other political and official figures, Dr Ghebreyesus urged them to actively support the discussions towards an international agreement to tackle pandemics (Pandemic Treaty): “If negotiations are completed by next May at the latest, as agreed, it would still be a giant achievement in very short time.”

Dr Ghebreyesus then expressed his admiration for “the range of careers for which this school is producing graduates”: “From clinical practice to public health and research,” he noted. “The simple truth is that there is no health without health and care workers.”

He emphasized the irreplaceable role of healthcare workers despite the advancements in artificial intelligence and other technologies: “The COVID-19 pandemic showed us just how important they are,” he said.

Concluding, Dr Ghebreyesus said: “WHO was founded 76 years ago, in 1948, as the world emerged from the devastation of the Second World War. Like the United Nations of which we are a part, WHO was born of the recognition that the only alternative to global conflict was global cooperation. Israel, Switzerland, and Greece. Additionally, hundreds of relatives and friends of the graduates were in attendance, having travelled to Cyprus from all continents.

In his opening remarks, the Dean of the Medical School, Professor Adonis Ioannides extended his congratulations to the graduating class. He touched upon various achievements of the School, notably in the fields of education, innovation, and social contribution. Emphasizing the School’s rich research output and its extensive publications, he underscored their significant contribution to the University’s international ranking. Professor Ioannides also made note of the remarkably high employment rate of the School’s graduates.

In his message to the future leaders in medicine, the Rector of the University, Professor Philippos Pouyioutas underscored the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI). He urged the graduates to seize this unique opportunity and leverage AI’s capabilities while adhering to ethical, socially responsible, and patient-centred approaches. He expressed his vision for a more efficient, effective, and compassionate healthcare system, where the fusion of AI and human expertise can bring about transformative advancements.

Addressing the graduating class, Minister of Health, Dr Popi Kanari, highlighted their successful completion of the first step in their medical journey and encouraged them to face challenges with dignity. She urged them to seize opportunities, and emphasised the importance of valuing their identity and diversity. She advocated for them to become doers and not just dreamers, and to follow their instincts. She concluded by stating that their vision would be the beacon in their lives, leading to the changes they wished to implement.

Addressing the graduates, keynote speaker Professor Paul Finucane, Member of the School’s International Advisory Board, stressed that while the attainment of a medical degree confers enormous privileges, it also carries major responsibility. He advised the graduates on three issues. They should look after the communities in which they live, they should stay in contact with and look after one another as they go through life, and they should look after themselves and avoid the dangers that too often blight the careers and the lives of doctors. He welcomed graduates into what is surely the greatest of all professions and one that will allow them not only to enhance their own lives but also the lives of others.

In recognition of their extraordinary contributions to the field of medicine, two esteemed personalities from Cyprus were awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science (Medicine) honoris causa.
