The training in brief

The training is organised by the Unit for Diversity Competence (UDC) in Healthcare and Healthcare Education of the University of Nicosia, and aims to provide healthcare professionals with a framework for working effectively and appropriately with diversity. The training will be experiential based on story-telling, discussions, team-based learning, and role play. Participants will essentially lead the training with the help of a facilitator, aiming to use their prior experiences and knowledge, and any newly acquired knowledge and skills form the training, to discuss, agree on and apply specific DCC (Diversity and Cultural Competence) behaviours for more sustainable implementation.

Background

There is evidence to suggest that a large percentage of patients’ complaints relate to problematic communication and doctor-patient relationships, in countries like the USA and the UK. Importantly, for other common complaints, such as negligence, wrong prescription, appointments, waiting time etc, very often communication is the underlying cause. Research in Cyprus and Greece also indicates that communication is a major reason why patients file complaints against their doctors.

Expected benefits from the training

The training will help healthcare professionals to enhance their knowledge and skills in working with diverse patients in cross-cultural environments, contributing towards improved doctor-patient relationships, communication, patient satisfaction and health outcomes. In addition, the training is a requirement for accreditation purposes.
