Medical student presents HIV prevention research at ESCMID Global in Munich<\/h1>\n

Maria Antonia Kalatta, an MD Year 4 student recently presented a research poster<\/a> at ESCMID Global, the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, in Munich, Germany.<\/p>\n

The study examines the demographic, behavioural, and clinical profiles of individuals seeking Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) in Cyprus, aiming to identify gaps in current prevention services.<\/p>\n

It was conducted under the supervision of Danny Alon-Ellenbogen, Clinical Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases (pictured above) and Annalisa Quattrocchi, Assistant Professor of Epidemiology, as well as Dr Georgios Siakallis, Head of the Gregorios HIV Clinic at Larnaca General Hospital.<\/p>\n

Initially presented at the Medical School\u2019s student research conference, the work was subsequently accepted for the poster exhibition at ESCMID Global.<\/p>\n

PEP is an emergency 28-day, three-drug antiretroviral regimen that must be initiated within 72 hours following a high-risk HIV exposure to prevent infection.<\/p>\n

By analysing 214 individuals who sought PEP at the Gregorios Clinic, the study highlighted that while PEP uptake is high and often timely, reliance on a single centralised service in Larnaca creates significant barriers to access.<\/p>\n

Among participants, 85.5% were male, largely identifying as men who have sex with men (MSM), though a notable number of heterosexual individuals also sought care.<\/p>\n

While nearly half of the participants presented within the optimal 24-hour window, the study identified critical \u2018missed opportunities\u2019 for long-term prevention. Specifically, although 72.9% were willing to attend regular sexual health clinics, only 52.3% were willing to use Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), and 13.1% had never previously been tested for HIV.<\/p>\n

These results underscore the urgent need to decentralise PEP access and integrate PrEP into the General Health System to strengthen HIV prevention efforts in Cyprus.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

War in the Middle East: Regional Security and Strategy Perspectives<\/h1>\n

The Department of Politics and Governance of the University of Nicosia successfully hosted the webinar titled \u201cWar in the Middle East: Regional Security and Strategy Perspectives\u201d on Thursday, 2 April 2026. The event was organised by the\u00a0MA in International Relations and Eastern Mediterranean Studies, E-Learning\/Distance Learning (Online) programme<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bringing together a diverse online audience, the session focused on the implications of the latest escalation in the Middle East and its broader impact on regional security dynamics. The speakers examined how immediate tactical decisions may shape long-term strategic challenges and regional stability, and addressed how the ongoing conflict intersects with the evolving security framework of the Eastern Mediterranean.<\/p>\n

The webinar featured presentations by distinguished academics of the Department of Politics and Governance of the University of Nicosia, Dr Constantinos Adamides (Associate Professor and Head of Department) and Dr Giorgos Kentas (Associate Professor). The session was moderated by Dr Michalis Kontos, Associate Professor of the Department of Politics and Governance and Programme Coordinator of the MA in International Relations and Eastern Mediterranean Studies.<\/p>\n

A discussion followed the presentations, giving participants the opportunity to exchange views on the emerging risks facing states in the Eastern Mediterranean and the strategic implications of the Middle East conflict.<\/p>\n

NEOLAiA: Work Abroad with Purpose – Become a Funded English Language Assistant in Germany (Fall 2026)<\/h2>\n

NEOLAiA Work Package 7 (Towards a Plurilingual and Intercultural European University) is announcing one funded position for an English language assistant at a partner university.<\/p>\n

As part of the University of Nicosia\u2019s participation in the European University Alliance NEOLAiA,\u00a0 we offer our students every year the possibility to act as an English language assistant in one of the other NEOLAiA partner universities. The main goal is to support the appropriate development of the courses taught in English at the hosting universities.<\/p>\n

Please note that this is not a regular Erasmus+ exchange. These positions are offered under Erasmus+ Traineeship\/Internship. This means that students will not be taking any courses at the hosting institution during that semester.\u00a0 They will be collaborating with lecturers and students from the hosting institution working on specific tasks (35 hours\/week). To qualify for one of these positions, candidates must be registered postgraduate students and must have an excellent command of English. Candidates must be also willing to complete an online preparatory course before taking up their duties at the hosting university (20 hours, free of charge).<\/p>\n

Please note that in addition to acting as an English language assistant for EMI courses (English-medium instruction), students will also offer an informal short course on Greek language and culture at the hosting university (A1 level). Hence, applicants should speak, in addition to English (level C1-C2), also Greek. The successful candidate will be offered a training course prior to the educational trip (online) and s\/he will also have the support of our Greek teacher.<\/p>\n

The mobility will take place in Fall Semester 2026, will be carried out at the University of Bielefeld (Germany), will have a duration of one semester and will be funded by our Erasmus+ Office (Erasmus+ Traineeship).<\/p>\n

    We are pleased to share that the project \u201cGearing up SMEs for value chain digitalization through blockchain-based distributed trust (Block4SME)\u201d, Agreement Number: 2023-1-CY01-KA220-VET-000151955, has been recognised as an example of good practice and flagged as such in the European Project Results Platform.<\/h3>\n

    Block4SME was developed to support small and medium-sized enterprises in advancing value chain digitalization through blockchain-based distributed trust.
