About the Programme:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Ph.D. in Physiotherapy programme aims to prepare doctorate students to achieve advanced knowledge and skills using theory and knowledge from the fields of Physiotherapy, Rehabilitation, and Clinical Biomechanics fields and prepare them for positions in the management and administration of Physiotherapy practice and academia. In addition, the candidates will have the opportunity to develop independent and innovative research related to their chosen field.<\/p>\n

The programme provides Ph.D candidates with in-depth academic and practical knowledge in the modern research equipment of Rehabilitation and Clinical Biomechanics. The program directs students in research design and execution as well as in the interpretation of the results.<\/h3>\n

The specific aims of the programme are to:<\/strong><\/h3>\n
    \n
  • Develop students\u2019 advanced knowledge and expertise in Physiotherapy research methods, including qualitative and quantitative methods, to conduct rigorous research studies.<\/li>\n
  • Advance students\u2019 understanding of theoretical and conceptual frameworks relevant to all specialties of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation.<\/li>\n
  • Cultivate students\u2019 skills in grant writing and securing funding for research studies.<\/li>\n
  • Develop students\u2019 ability to disseminate research findings through publications in academic journals, presentations at conferences, and other venues, and to contribute to the advancement of their field.<\/li>\n
  • Help students to prepare for a career in academic research or leadership roles in Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    PhD holders in Physiotherapy:<\/strong><\/h3>\n
      \n
    • Demonstrate advanced knowledge in a specialized area consistent with the focus of their graduate programme.<\/li>\n
    • Demonstrate qualitative and quantitative skills in data collection and analysis typically used in their chosen field of research<\/li>\n
    • Construct and create research questions and hypotheses, in order to answer original and innovative questions in their chosen field of research<\/li>\n
    • Design, construct and execute independent research protocols in order to contribute to previous empirical and theoretical knowledge in the field of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation<\/li>\n
    • Conduct independent research, resulting in an original contribution to knowledge consistent to the candidates\u2019 field of interest.<\/li>\n
    • Produced written and oral communications of the highest quality, in order to communicate the results of their research<\/li>\n
    • Demonstrate proficiency and ethics both in conducting their research project as well as in the interpretation and communication of their results.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      The language of instruction of the programme is English and Greek.<\/p>\n

      The programme focuses on the following multidisciplinary research key themes:<\/strong><\/h3>\n
        \n
      • Musculoskeletal injuries and disorders<\/li>\n
      • Obesity, Metabolic syndrome and chronic Musculoskeletal diseases<\/li>\n
      • Gait and Movement analysis of clinical populations<\/li>\n
      • Athletic injury screening and return to sports assessments<\/li>\n
      • Cardiovascular diseases (CVD)<\/li>\n
      • Risk Factors for developing CVD (e.g. Obesity, Hypertension, Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome, etc)<\/li>\n
      • Pulmonary diseases<\/li>\n
      • Rehabilitation and therapeutic exercise of clinical populations<\/li>\n
      • Cardiopulmonary assessment<\/li>\n
      • Rehabilitation in Chronic Sleep Problems<\/li>\n
      • Rehabilitation in Chronic Fatigue conditions and syndromes (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Long Covid, Fibromyalgia, cancer-related fatigue etc.). Graded Exercise Physiotherapy, activity management and telerehabilitation methods can be included.<\/li>\n
      • Use of immersive techniques (Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Mixed Reality) in neurological rehabilitation and other conditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        In addition to these broad topics, the following more specific projects are active at the moment and students can select them:<\/p>\n

        Diabetes Mellitus: two suggested projects. One focuses on both the kinetic and kinematic changes in gait DM patients and the other focuses on individual characteristics of shoulder problems in these patients.<\/p>\n

        Non-specific Low Back Pain: two suggested projects. One will examine kinematic and kinetic differences, while the other will focus on differences in proprioception and postural control among individuals with and without acute non-specific low back pain.<\/p>\n

        Tendinopathies: two suggested projects. The first one will validate a new tool to assess the biomechanical properties of upper and lower limb tendons, and the other will design and test the effect of a new loading protocol for Tennis Elbow.<\/p>\n

        Shoulder pain in overhead athletes: Risk factors for shoulder pain in overhead athletes, examined separately for male and female athletes.<\/p>\n

        Admission Requirements and Procedures<\/h3>\n
          \n
        1. Academic Qualifications:<\/strong> Master Degree (MSc) in Physiotherapy or other Health Sciences, Bachelor Degree (BSc) in Physiotherapy or other Health Sciences, Accredited Apolyterion of Secondary Education, Registered in the registrar of the profession they belong. Applicants that do not fulfil this requirement may still apply to the programme subject to the evaluation of their academic qualifications by the Department Doctoral Programme Committee. Copies of degrees awarded must be submitted as part of a complete application package.<\/li>\n
        2. Application Form:<\/strong> Applicants must submit an application form for admission and enrolment to the programme. The application form requests general information about the applicant, their qualifications, relevant experience.<\/li>\n
        3. Curriculum Vitae:<\/strong> a complete CV specifying all academic and professional activities<\/li>\n
        4. Letters of Recommendation:<\/strong> Applicants must obtain two recommendation letters from individuals who have known the applicant in an educational and\/or professional environment. At least one of the recommendation letters must be from an academic institution where the applicant has studied previously.<\/li>\n
        5. English Language Proficiency:<\/strong> TOEFL (paper-based test 600, computer-based test 250, internet-based test 100) or IELTS 6.5. For students who graduated from an English-speaking University, English language is not a requirement. Proficiency in English Language is an essential requirement even in cases where the thesis is to be submitted in Greek as research undertaken towards completing the thesis is expected to include English-language resources.<\/li>\n
        6. Publications:<\/strong> Previous theses\/dissertations and any published work of academic relevance (if any).<\/li>\n
        7. Initial Research Proposal:<\/strong> An initial proposal (1,000 \u2013 2,000 words) outlining the research topic, aims and objectives, research questions and proposed research methodology as follows:
          \n– Title
          \n– Literature review (brief)
          \n– Identifications of gaps in existing literature and rationale for proposed research
          \n– Aims and objectives
          \n– Research hypotheses
          \n– Research methodology
          \n– Ethical Considerations (if applicable)
          \n– Expected output
          \n– Time plan for completion
          \n– References<\/li>\n
        8. Statement of Purpose:<\/strong> Applicants are required to submit a comprehensive outline highlighting their academic and individual competencies and state why they believe they are suitable for admission to the Programme, as well as their reflections regarding the expectations and value of the Programme for their personal advancement and career development.<\/li>\n
        9. Individual Interviews:<\/strong> The Department Doctoral Programme Committee may decide whether to hold an individual interview of the applicant prior to deciding. The Department Doctoral Programme Committee, having examined the applicant\u2019s suitability against the entry criteria, having reviewed the application and interviewed the applicant, will determine his or her suitability and the appropriateness of their initial proposal.<\/li>\n
        10. Final Evaluation:<\/strong> In view of the limited number of applicants to be admitted to the programme, the Department Doctoral Programme Committee will decide on the basis of merit and by evaluating specific criteria who are the most suitable candidates to be admitted to the programme. The Committee will exercise its judgment, taking into account the overall quality, merit and feasibility of the research proposal, the quality of the prior research work of the candidate and the candidate\u2019s academic and other relevant qualifications as included in the curriculum vitae and the applicant\u2019s performance during the individual interview (if such an interview is conducted).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

          The School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) Newsletter<\/h2>\n

          Welcome to the 11th edition of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences Newsletter, published at the end of another productive and inspiring academic year. As we reflect on 2025\u20132026, we celebrate the achievements of our students, faculty, researchers, alumni, and partners whose dedication continues to enrich the academic life of our School and advance our School’s mission.<\/p>\n

          This edition highlights scholarly, creative, and community-engaged activities across our Departments. The Department of Languages and Literature showcases important achievements in language education, linguistics, artificial intelligence, international collaborations, publications, and doctoral research. The Department of Social Sciences presents initiatives that promote inclusion, mentoring, and community engagement, alongside significant developments in psychology and child and adolescent protection. The Department of Design and Multimedia demonstrates the remarkable creativity of our students and faculty through exhibitions, international collaborations, publications, workshops, and innovative design practices. The Department of Communications continues to explore emerging technologies and their impact on journalism, media, and public communication, fostering critical dialogue on the future of the field.<\/p>\n

          This year has also been particularly significant for the growth of the University through UNIC Athens, which continues to expand educational opportunities in Greece. We are especially pleased to highlight the launch of the four-year BSc Psychology programme at UNIC Athens. This development reflects our commitment to extending the reach and impact of Psychology education and research beyond Cyprus while maintaining the high academic standards that define the University of Nicosia.<\/p>\n

          A defining moment of the year was the Graduation Ceremony of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, held on 26 June 2026. It was a privilege to celebrate the accomplishments of our graduates as they concluded an important chapter in their lives and prepared to embark on new professional and personal journeys. We are immensely proud of each and every one of them and look forward to witnessing their future contributions to society.
          \nAs we conclude this academic year, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all colleagues, students, staff, alumni, and collaborators who contribute to the continued success of our School.<\/p>\n
