University of Nicosia Team Participated in the Oral Rounds of the PAX Moot Court Competition<\/strong> 2026<\/strong> in Sofia<\/strong><\/h1>\n

The University of Nicosia is pleased to announce the successful participation of its team in the oral rounds of the PAX Moot Court Competition 2026 (Vladimir Kutikov Round), held on15-17 April 2026 at Sofia University \u201cSt. Kliment Ohridski\u201d in Bulgaria.<\/h3>\n

The PAX Moot is a leading international moot court competition dedicated exclusively to Private International Law, bringing together law students from across jurisdictions to argue complex cross-border disputes involving jurisdiction, choice of law, and the recognition and enforcement of judgments.<\/p>\n

The University of Nicosia team was successfully selected for the oral rounds following a highly competitive written phase. Representatives of the University included Vasilis Evangeliou, Olga Charalampous, and Dionysis Tsikaderis, assisted by Eva Manolova and Nicoletta Zacharopoulos, under the coaching of Dr. Nicolas Kyriakides. During the oral rounds, the team competed against leading universities, including the University of M\u00fcnster (Germany), Sofia University \u201cSt. Kliment Ohridski\u201d (Bulgaria), ESADE Law School of Ramon Llull University (Spain), and the University of Milano-Bicocca (Italy). The rounds provided an opportunity to engage in high-level legal argumentation and to develop advanced advocacy skills in a demanding international environment.<\/p>\n

The PAX Moot 2026 concluded with outstanding performances across all participating teams. The University of Ljubljana was awarded first place, with Sofia University \u201cSt. Kliment Ohridski\u201d finishing as runner-up. The award for Best Written Submission (shared first place) was presented to the University of Warsaw and the University of Ljubljana, while honourable mentions were awarded to Singapore Management University, Universidad Aut\u00f3noma de Madrid and the University of Antwerp.<\/p>\n

In the individual awards, Chloe Xin Ying Chia (Singapore Management University) was named Best Oralist, followed by Lara Vangoethem (Maastricht University) in second place and Benedetta Gargiulo (Maastricht University) in third place.<\/p>\n

The University of Nicosia expresses its sincere appreciation to the Cyprus Bar Association, L Papaphilippou & Co LLC, Christos Georgiades & Associates LLC, Emilianides Katsaros LLC, and Harris Kyriakides for their generous financial support, which made the team\u2019s participation possible.<\/p>\n

The University is particularly proud of the team\u2019s dedication, professionalism, and commitment throughout the months of preparation leading up to the oral rounds. Their participation in this prestigious competition reflects the strength of advocacy training and the growing prominence of Private International Law within the University\u2019s academic programme. New Study Reveals the \u2018Time Paradox\u2019: Why Hybrid Work Often Fails to Deliver Gender Equality<\/h2>\n

Research from the University of Nicosia accepted for publication in the International Journal of Management Reviews (IJMR) identifies four critical paradoxes that prevent hybrid work from being truly sustainable and inclusive.<\/h3>\n

A new study has challenged the widely held belief that hybrid and remote work arrangements are a natural \u2018equaliser\u2019 for the modern workforce. The research, an integrative review of fragmented literature across multiple disciplines, finds that deeply ingrained gendered perceptions of time frequently undermine the very sustainability and flexibility these work models promise.<\/p>\n

The paper, titled \u2018Decoding the Paradox: The effects of gendered perceptions of time on sustainable hybrid work\u2019, positions time not as a neutral resource but as a socially valued mechanism used to judge commitment and productivity.<\/p>\n

The Four Paradoxes of Hybrid Work<\/h3>\n

The researchers identified four \u2018critical paradoxes\u2019 that explain why hybrid work outcomes are not uniform across genders:<\/p>\n

1. Flexibility Paradox:<\/strong> While promising autonomy, flexibility often reinforces traditional roles. Women frequently use flexible time to absorb increased caregiving and domestic burdens, while men are more likely to use it for uninterrupted productivity and career advancement.
\n2. Visibility Paradox:<\/strong> Hybrid work shifts performance metrics toward outcomes, yet “presenteeism” persists. Women\u2019s contributions\u2014often performed outside traditional hours or while multitasking\u2014often become \u2018doubly invisible\u2019, leading to lower promotion rates and recognition.
\n3. Work-Life Integration Paradox:<\/strong> The permeability of boundaries between home and office can lead to \u2018temporal saturation\u2019, where women\u2019s time is seen as infinitely adaptable to competing demands. This leads to higher rates of stress, exhaustion, and burnout.
\n4. Inclusion Paradox:<\/strong> Inclusion in hybrid settings is often governed by \u2018temporal access\u2019. Those who work asynchronously or with fragmented schedules-disproportionately women-are often pushed to the margins of informal networks and decision-making processes.<\/p>\n

Challenging the \u2018Ideal Worker\u2019 Norm<\/h3>\n

The study highlights that even in a digital world, the \u2018ideal worker\u2019 archetype<\/strong>-someone who is always available and physically present-continues to disadvantage those with caregiving responsibilities. Because women\u2019s time is often perceived as fragmented and interruptible, their professional commitment is frequently viewed with more scepticism than that of their male counterparts.<\/p>\n

Researcher Comment<\/h3>\n

\u2018Our findings show that flexibility alone is insufficient to deliver enduring and inclusive outcomes\u2019, says author Prof Joana Vassilopoulou<\/strong>. \u2018To fully realise the promise of hybrid work, organisations must move beyond surface-level policies and dismantle the structural and cultural biases<\/strong> that equate ‘presence’ with ‘performance.’ Time is not gender-neutral; we need to rethink how we value and recognise work that doesn’t fit the traditional linear model if we want a truly sustainable workforce future\u2019.<\/p>\n

Policy and Practical Implications<\/h3>\n

The research offers a \u2018diagnostic tool\u2019 for HR practitioners and policymakers to create more equitable environments. Key recommendations include:<\/p>\n

\u2022 Challenging the \u2018Ideal Worker\u2019 Model:<\/strong> Moving away from rewarding constant availability and toward equitable performance evaluation systems.<\/strong>
\n\u2022 Addressing Visibility Bias:<\/strong> Implementing transparent metrics that recognise contributions made during asynchronous or remote work hours.
\n\u2022 Fostering Work-Life Inclusion:<\/strong> Normalising flexibility for all employees<\/strong>, regardless of gender, to ensure caregiving is not stigmatised as a \u2018women’s issue\u2019.
\n\u2022 Intentional Inclusion:<\/strong> Designing virtual interactions that ensure remote and asynchronous workers have equal access to mentorship and leadership opportunities.<\/p>\n
