University of Nicosia Vice-President for Global Partnerships joined Times Higher Education panel on university preparedness for global technological shifts in Milan<\/strong><\/p>\n

Professor Dimitris Drikakis, Vice-President for Global Partnerships and Dean of the School of Sciences & Engineering at the University of Nicosia, participated as a speaker at the Times Higher Education Europe Universities Summit 2026<\/strong>, held in Milan, Italy, from 5\u20137 May 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Professor Drikakis joined the panel \u201cUniversity Preparedness for Global Technological Shifts\u201d<\/strong>, a workshop-style session addressing how universities can respond strategically to rapid technological change, including artificial intelligence, digital platforms and data-driven decision-making. The session took place on 7 May 2026<\/strong> at the Quark Hotel Milano and was moderated by Dirk Leuffen, Vice-Rector for Research, Impact and Innovation at the University of Konstanz.<\/p>\n

During the discussion, Professor Drikakis addressed the enormous changes artificial intelligence is bringing to academia and industry. He highlighted that AI is no longer a peripheral digital tool but a structural force reshaping the way universities teach, conduct research, manage operations and engage with external partners.<\/p>\n

In teaching, he discussed how AI is influencing curriculum design, student assessment, personalised learning and the evolving role of educators. In research, he noted AI\u2019s growing capacity to accelerate discovery, support modelling and simulation, analyse large-scale datasets and transform publication and research workflows. He also underlined the implications for university operations, including student services, quality assurance, administrative efficiency, strategic planning and institutional governance.<\/p>\n

Professor Drikakis further emphasised that AI\u2019s impact extends beyond higher education into industry, where it is changing productivity models, innovation cycles, workforce skills and the relationship between universities and employers. He argued that universities must respond not only by adopting new tools, but by preparing students, researchers and institutions for a labour market and innovation ecosystem increasingly shaped by intelligent systems.<\/p>\n

\u201cAI is changing how knowledge is produced, taught and applied. Universities must move quickly, but not uncritically. Real preparedness means combining innovation with academic quality, ethical oversight, risk management and a clear understanding of how AI will reshape the talent and research pipelines that connect higher education with industry,\u201d<\/em> said Professor Drikakis.<\/p>\n

The panel examined what genuine institutional preparedness for technological change means in practice. Key themes included leadership readiness, responsible investment, academic quality, ethics, risk management, data governance and the need to avoid both technological inertia and uncritical adoption.<\/p>\n

Professor Drikakis stressed that successful AI integration requires a whole-institution strategy. This includes robust governance frameworks, AI literacy for staff and students, responsible use policies, investment in digital infrastructure and a commitment to ensuring that technological adoption strengthens rather than weakens the academic mission.<\/p>\n

The THE Europe Universities Summit 2026<\/strong>, held under the theme \u201cUnite to lead: Elevating Europe\u2019s global role in higher education,\u201d<\/strong> brought together leaders, innovators and changemakers from academia, policy and industry to explore how European higher education can strengthen its global position through collaboration, innovation, interdisciplinarity and strategic leadership.<\/p>\n

Dr Nicolas Kyriakides Delivered Guest Lecture at Aston Law School<\/strong><\/h1>\n

The Director of the Procedural Law Unit (PLU) at the University of Nicosia (UNIC) Dr. Nicolas Kyriakides,<\/strong> delivered a guest lecture at Aston Law School on his latest research, examining the fallacies of human adjudication, building on his previous research regarding public perceptions of AI-assisted rapid preliminary adjudication.<\/p>\n

The lecture explored how debates surrounding AI in civil justice often overlook the existing limitations of traditional human adjudication, including inconsistency, subjective reasoning, cognitive bias, procedural delay, and concerns surrounding fairness and transparency. Drawing on comparative research across Cyprus, Germany, and England & Wales, Dr Kyriakides\u2019 presentation considered how these longstanding challenges continue to affect public trust in dispute resolution systems.<\/p>\n

As Dr Kyriakides noted during the lecture, \u201cthe real comparison is not between \u2018biased AI\u2019 and \u2018neutral humans\u2019, but between human bias and algorithmic bias\u201d. He explained that human adjudication is often shaped by inconsistency, institutional pressures, and subjective decision-making, whereas AI systems, despite their risks, may at least be tested, audited, and subjected to institutional oversight.<\/p>\n

The discussion further examined whether hybrid models combining technological innovation with meaningful human oversight may help address some of the structural weaknesses affecting modern civil justice systems and improve access to justice in the future.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

The Medical School\u2019s Public Health lecture series at UNIC Athens, organised in collaboration with the Municipality of Elliniko-Argyroupoli, continued last Tuesday with a timely and thought-provoking lecture by Professor Nikolaos Spyridis on the growing threat of emerging infectious diseases and future pandemics.<\/p>\n

In his presentation, titled ‘Disease X and Emerging Viruses: How Close Are We to the Next Pandemic’?, Prof. Spyridis warned that future global health crises are statistically inevitable, stressing that the world must move away from asking if another pandemic will occur and instead focus on when it will happen and how prepared health systems are to respond.<\/p>\n

Drawing on data from the 21st century, Prof. Spyridis noted that epidemics now occur approximately every three to four years, while major pandemics emerge roughly every seven years. He emphasized that rapid and coordinated international action will be critical in mitigating the impact of future outbreaks.<\/p>\n

A key focus of the lecture was the importance of what he described as the ‘100-day response window’ \u2014 the period within which global health authorities should be able to identify new pathogens and develop effective treatments and vaccines. According to Prof. Spyridis, accelerating scientific collaboration and preparedness mechanisms will be essential in limiting the spread of future ‘Disease X’ scenarios.<\/p>\n

The lecture also highlighted the dangers posed by information gaps and delayed public awareness. Referring to the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Prof. Spyridis described the situation as a stark reminder that serious viral threats can remain underreported internationally despite being classified as public health emergencies.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, he noted that delays in recognising and officially classifying outbreaks often contribute to underestimating their severity, ultimately hindering effective response efforts. Early intervention, transparent communication and institutional readiness, he argued, are essential to preventing similar shortcomings in the future.<\/p>\n

Rather than encouraging panic, Prof. Spyridis called for stronger global preparedness systems, improved international coordination and clearer communication of health risks to the public.<\/p>\n
