Archimandrite Anastasios Poyiadjis, Honorary Professor of Tropical Medicine at the Medical School, first in Nicosia on 26 March and then in Athens on 31 March, bringing together students and faculty across both campuses.<\/p>\n<p>With attendance exceeding 130 in total, the lectures offered participants a valuable opportunity to learn from the Archimandrite\u2019s extensive experience as both a missionary priest and physician. Since 1993, he has dedicated much of his life to medical and pastoral service in several African countries, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, and Madagascar. Over the past 16 years, his work has been based in Madagascar.<\/p>\n<p>The lectures gave attendees deeper insight into Tropical Medicine, a branch of medicine concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, and management of communicable and non-communicable diseases prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions. Drawing on his clinical and humanitarian work in rural Madagascar, the Archimandrite spoke about a wide range of health challenges commonly encountered in such settings.<\/p>\n<p>These included parasitic and infectious diseases such as malaria and schistosomiasis, as well as conditions linked to environmental and working conditions, nutritional deficiencies, sanitation-related factors, and limited access to safe drinking water. Particular attention was also given to major public health concerns such as maternal and child mortality and malnutrition.<\/p>\n<p>The lectures also explored the broader realities and challenges of practising medicine in low-resource settings, offering important perspectives for students and faculty with an interest in global health and tropical medicine.<\/p>\n<p>During the sessions, Rev. collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Black Sea and Eastern Mediterranean Studies (ILABSEM) of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the School of Law, University of Nicosia, invites submissions for an international interdisciplinary conference on \u201cQuantum Technologies, Artificial Intelligence and Law\u201d, to be held in September 2026.<\/p>\n<p>As quantum computing advances toward practical deployment and artificial intelligence systems become structurally embedded in governance, finance, security, and justice, law faces a structural epistemic challenge. We are no longer merely regulating applications; we are confronting technological paradigms that destabilise foundational assumptions of legal certainty, accountability, evidence, sovereignty, and risk allocation.<\/p>\n<p>Quantum technologies promise exponential computational capacity, potentially disrupting cryptography, financial infrastructures, cybersecurity architectures, and even evidentiary standards. AI systems, increasingly autonomous and data-intensive, raise questions concerning agency, liability, regulatory design, constitutional safeguards, and democratic legitimacy.<\/p>\n<p>Taken together, quantum technologies and AI represent not incremental innovation but a systemic transformation of normative orders. Lecturer in Medical Ethics at the Medical School, has recently published a new article in Clinical Ethics, a quarterly peer-reviewed journal published by Sage Publications.<\/p>\n<p>Her article, titled \u2018Empowering women\u2019s choice in the new era of non-invasive prenatal testing methods: Opting for routine perinatal care information over routine screening\u2019, re-examines the role of routine prenatal testing in promoting women\u2019s reproductive autonomy.<\/p>\n<p>In the paper, Dr Nakou argues that the routine offering of prenatal screening may inadvertently undermine genuine autonomous decision-making. She suggests that, rather than routinely offering tests such as non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), healthcare systems should first provide high-quality counselling, enabling women to reflect on their values and preferences before deciding whether to undergo testing.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Nakou explains: &#8216;Autonomous decision-making amidst the challenges of new screening and testing methods requires more than providing accurate, balanced, and non-directive information&#8217;. She therefore proposes a reorientation of prenatal care, where routine, high-quality counselling comes before the offer of screening, allowing women to explore their values, expectations, and concerns in advance. In this way, decisions about testing are more likely to reflect what genuinely matters to them, rather than being shaped by the structure and timing of the offer The programme focuses on developing the skills necessary for graduates to become independent researchers at postdoctoral level. The programme comprises several areas of specialisation; however, candidates will have to propose projects within the specialist areas within the supervisor\u2019s fields of expertise.<\/p>\n<p>Doctoral students are expected to design and execute an independent original research project and produce a Thesis. Arsenopoulos<\/strong>, Associate Professor of Cattle and Herd Medicine at the School of Veterinary Medicine, and <strong>Dr Elias Papadopoulos<\/strong> of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.<\/p>\n<p>The publication, titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1422-0067\/27\/6\/2903\"><em>&#8220;Molecular Investigation of Eimeria spp. Infection in Weaned Dairy Calves in Thessaly, Greece, and Associated Risk Factors&#8221;<\/em><\/a>, presents important findings on Eimeria infections in dairy calves and the farm management practices associated with an increased risk of transmission.<\/p>\n<p>The study provides new molecular epidemiological data on bovine coccidiosis and highlights key risk factors in intensive dairy farming systems.
