ENT doctors and medical students attend UNIC lecture by Harvard academic<\/h1>\n

A guest lecture on hidden hearing loss and tinnitus brought together ENT doctors and medical students on Tuesday, 12 May 2026, for a discussion on one of the less visible challenges in hearing assessment.<\/p>\n

The lecture, titled Hidden hearing loss, tinnitus, and the limits of clinical assessment, was delivered by Dr St\u00e9phane Maison, Director of the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Tinnitus Clinic in Boston, USA, and Associate Professor of Otolaryngology at Harvard Medical School.<\/p>\n

Held at the Jean Monnet Amphitheatre, the event focused on groundbreaking work at the Eaton-Peabody Laboratories, Mass Eye and Ear Tinnitus Clinic, and Harvard Medical School, on the phenomenon known as ‘hidden hearing loss’. Research by Dr Maison and colleagues has advanced understanding of patients who report difficulty hearing speech in noisy environments despite having normal hearing test results. The work showed that standard audiograms may fail to detect damage to the connections between sensory hair cells and auditory nerve fibres, known as cochlear synaptopathy. Current translational work in this area aims to improve diagnosis and support the development of therapies intended to restore these neural connections, with some treatment strategies now moving towards clinical application.<\/p>\n

The lecture was introduced by Prof. Vered Aharonson, Programme Lead in Digital Healthcare at the Medical School. Attendance included both ENT specialists and medical students, pointing to the wider clinical and educational interest in conditions that sit at the intersection of auditory neuroscience, diagnosis, and patient-centred care.<\/p>\n

Dr Manos C. Vlasiou has been appointed Associate Editor in the Food and Nutritional Toxicology<\/a> section of Frontiers in Toxicology, an international peer-reviewed journal.<\/p>\n

In this role, he will contribute to the journal\u2019s editorial process by supporting the peer review and evaluation of submissions in his field. The appointment relates to the area of food and nutritional toxicology, which brings together research on food safety, toxicological risk, and public health.<\/p>\n

Our Procedural Law Director, Dr Nicolas Kyriakides, participated in the Rule of Law Conference held during the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2026, where discussions focused on the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in democratic institutions and legal systems.<\/p>\n

During his address, Dr Kyriakides argued that debates surrounding AI and justice often begin from a flawed assumption that human decision-making is inherently neutral while technology itself represents the primary risk.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe key comparison, therefore, is not \u2018biased AI\u2019 versus \u2018neutral humans\u2019. That comparison is false. The real comparison is between human bias and algorithmic bias\u201d, he emphasized.<\/p>\n

He noted that judicial and administrative decision-making is inevitably shaped by human factors, including cognitive bias, institutional pressures, inconsistency, and subjective reasoning. In contrast, while algorithmic bias remains a serious concern, AI systems may at least be audited, tested, and subjected to institutional oversight.<\/p>\n

He further examined whether AI-assisted adjudication, when combined with transparency, accountability, and meaningful human supervision, could strengthen core rule of law principles such as consistency, fairness, and access to justice.<\/p>\n

Dr Kyriakides also referred to ongoing comparative research examining public perceptions of AI-assisted legal processes across multiple European jurisdictions, highlighting that citizens increasingly prioritise fairness and transparency over purely traditional models of decision-making.<\/p>\n
