Faculty and students publish new review on tumours of the hypothalamus and neurohypophysis<\/h1>\n

A paper led by graduate-entry MD students Alexia Kesta, Omar Itani and Yahya Wehbeh, in collaboration with Dr Dimitrios Kanakis, Professor of Pathology at the Medical School, has recently been published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences.<\/p>\n

The review<\/a> examines tumours of the posterior pituitary and hypothalamus of the brain, highlighting the diagnostic challenges they present due to their similarities to pituitary neuroendocrine tumours. It provides an overview of the latest WHO classification framework, which distinguishes these tumours according to their cell of origin, and outlines a practical diagnostic approach that combines anatomical, pathological and immunohistochemical findings to improve diagnostic accuracy.<\/p>\n

The authors emphasise that accurate classification is important not only for diagnosis but also for patient management. Some of these tumours can be difficult to remove completely and may require long-term imaging surveillance and endocrine follow-up. The review also discusses recent molecular discoveries that may help identify patients at greater risk of tumour progression and guide future treatment strategies.<\/p>\n

The article concludes by highlighting the need for large-scale collaborative studies that integrate clinical, imaging, pathological, and molecular data. Such efforts could improve risk assessment and support the development of evidence-based treatment approaches for these rare tumours.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

University of Nicosia NEOLAiA Team \u2013 Internal Coordination Meeting<\/b><\/h1>\n

The University of Nicosia’s NEOLAiA team held an internal coordination meeting on 1 July 2026, bringing together UNIC colleagues involved in the\u00a0NEOLAiA<\/a>\u00a0<\/a>European University Alliance project.<\/p>\n

Rector Professor Philippos Pouyioutas, a member of the NEOLAiA Governing Board, welcomed participants and provided an update on recent developments and decisions of the Governing Board. The Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Professor Panayiotis Angelides, and member of the NEOLAiA Steering Committee, shared updates from the Steering Committee, while Dr Melpo Iacovidou, member of the NEOLAiA Executive Committee, briefed participants on the work and recent decisions of the Executive Committee.<\/p>\n

During the meeting, Work Package Leaders and Delegates provided updates on the progress of their respective work packages, including recent activities, upcoming deliverables, future milestones, opportunities, and challenges. The meeting served to strengthen internal coordination, facilitate the exchange of information, and align priorities for the next phase of the project.<\/p>\n

UNIC Researchers Launch Study on the Mainstreaming of Far-Right Accelerationism<\/strong><\/h1>\n

In June, the project ‘Mainstreaming Far-Right Accelerationism: Discourse, Ideology, and Techno-Futurism in a Comparative Perspective’ was launched. The project is funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation’s Democracy Funding Programme for three years. The research team is composed of Dr. Giorgos Charalambous (Associate Professor of Political Science at the Department of Politics and Governance, University of Nicosia), Dr. Michaelangelo Anastasiou (Co-Director of Digital Transitions & Society, University of Nicosia), and Dr. Lazaros Karavasilis (Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of T\u00fcbingen\/University of Nicosia\/Hasselt University).<\/p>\n

The project investigates the rise of far-right accelerationism, an emergent ideological constellation that fuses apocalyptic narratives, techno-futurism, and post-democratic imaginaries. Using comparative discourse analysis, digital ethnography, and (social) media analysis across the U.S., U.K., and Germany, the study explores how accelerationist ideas critique liberal democracy, enable novel political alliances, and become mainstreamed. By systematising and analysing how accelerationist ideas are constructed, iterated, and circulated, the project maps processes of ideological cross-pollination between accelerationist groups, as well as between accelerationist and mainstream ideologies, thus identifying the manner by which accelerationism moves from the fringes to the mainstream.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

UNIC placed in the 401-600 band worldwide, strengthened its position among universities in Cyprus and Greece, and recorded standout results in SDG 10, SDG 11 and SDG 17<\/h3>\n

The University of Nicosia (UNIC) has earned another important international distinction in the Times Higher Education (THE) Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026, ranking in the 401-600 band globally among 1,646 universities from 116 countries and territories evaluated across 17 individual SDG tables and one overall ranking.<\/p>\n

This result places UNIC in the global Top 600 and reinforces the University\u2019s standing as one of the region\u2019s most internationally engaged higher education institutions. Based on the published results, UNIC is one of the universities from Cyprus and Greece to secure a place within this band, underlining both its regional strength and its growing international visibility.<\/p>\n

UNIC\u2019s strongest performances in this year\u2019s results were recorded in SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities<\/strong>, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities<\/strong>, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals<\/strong>, where it ranked in the 101-200 band globally. It also achieved a 301-400 result in SDG 3: Good Health and Wellbeing<\/strong> and SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Particularly significant was UNIC\u2019s strong result in SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals<\/strong>, an indicator that carries special weight in the overall methodology of the THE Sustainability Impact Ratings. This performance highlights the University\u2019s growing capacity to build meaningful academic, research, and societal partnerships that create measurable impact at both local and international level.<\/p>\n
