Dr Marios Sarris

Dr Marios Sarris is an Assistant Professor in Social Anthropology at the University of Nicosia. He obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, a Master’s degree in Social Anthropology and a PhD in Social Anthropology, all from the LSE. His assignment for the Master’s degree involved research in Cyprus on death.

For the purposes of his PhD, Dr Sarris carried out two years of anthropological fieldwork on Mount Athos. Since his return to Cyprus, Dr Sarris embarked on long term research on the Greek Orthodox Church in the island. More recently, he participated with an art historian in a major arts research project. The latter involves the cataloguing of the contents of an art museum, the production of digitized descriptive texts for its exhibits and the eventual publication of their findings.

Dr Sarris has published on issues pertaining to death rituals, coenobitic hierarchy and Church politics. His research interests include the anthropology of emotions, the relationship between religion and gender, ritual passage in total institutions and the theory of religious revivalism. More recently, Dr Sarris has moved into areas of material culture and colonial art representation.
