Grand rounds commence at Limassol General Hospital

The inaugural grand round presentation at Limassol General Hospital (LGH) was delivered on 16 October by final-year MD student Abdul Rahman Nabil Awad Iweir, under the supervision of Dr Andreas Kostis, Curriculum Lead for Geriatrics and Deputy Clinical Lead for Internal Medicine at LGH.

Grand rounds are formal, evidence-based lectures where medical students present a case or topic to an audience of other students, residents, and faculty for discussion and learning. These sessions foster critical discussion, collaborative learning, and clinical reasoning, while giving presenters the opportunity to strengthen their research, communication, and teaching skills.

Abdul’s presentation focused on a rare case of ‘Synovitis, Pericardial Effusion, and Cutaneous Abscesses’, which sparked discussion among students and doctors. What began as a possible infection turned out to be a challenging example of undifferentiated systemic inflammation.
The lecture was attended by students and doctors at Limassol General Hospital, creating an opportunity for knowledge exchange across UNIC’s medical community.

In a statement following the presentation, Abdul said: ‘Working on this presentation helped me sharpen how I analyse cases, interpret investigations, and explain my thought process clearly. Throughout the process, I received valuable feedback from my personal tutor, Dr Kostis, which helped me stay focused and build confidence’.
‘It was a rewarding experience; the discussion was engaging and supportive, and I would definitely encourage other students to take part in future grand rounds’, he added.

In his address, Prof Joseph Joseph, Chair of Clinical Education, expressed his excitement about the commencement of grand rounds in Limassol. ‘It has been an important aim of the clinical education department to establish grand rounds at our clinical sites. This is an excellent way for students to learn, combining knowledge, clinical assessment and presentation skills’, he said.
